    Saint John NB Canada bullshido?

    http://cleven.cl.funpic.de/

This club has hosted a couple of BJJ guys in the past. Last year Carly Gracie came for a day and a half. Before that Wagnney Fabiano was here. However recently i went to this school and he is actually teaching BJJ, apparently on a regular basis. He was very evasive about rankings, other than he is 3rd dan in World Kubodo Fed. I can't find him anywhere else in a listing, bjj.org etc.

His club was filled with trophies and the tacky Japanese knickknacks on the wall. pictures of the Sensei with martial arts celebrities and a pic of Helio on the front wall, where Jigaro Kano would be in the local Judo school. It gave me the vibe right away.

Also this guy yelled at people in his class and switched between ignoring them and talking about his personal life to anyone who'd listen and yelling again. Everyone has seen that Tigermask video, this is just a step or below that. No physicality.

Anyhow I am looking for a BJJ without havng to drive 3-4 hours, or anything decent near the area?

The sensei is named Britt Nickerson and claims to have fought MMA, I dont see a listing for him on fcfighter or Sherdog. Though there are some pics on his site of some of his students in MMA.

The prison tats on his neck are a concern if you want your kids training there.

I'm personally distrustful of the level of teaching at a school where one of the instructors can take a guy's back (with hooks in it looks like) and not be able to finish the deal on an RNC.

      But that's just me.

      TKD

PS - Britt Nickerson seem conspicuously absent from fcfighter.com as well.

Well, he has contradictory spelling and explanations on his website.

He has pictures of a MMA Event which his instructor/student lost.

        Then he has:

Because of its ancient traditions, Ju Jitsu draws from many different martial arts systems. Students are taught to kick, punch and throw, lock and immobilize limbs and also to use various weapons, such as the sword, staff, knife, sai and rice flails.

Ju Jitsu has not adapted as a sport as easily as other martial arts, so competition therefore plays a minor role.A wide range of Kata is studied however. Kata is the formal presentation of a martial art's techniques, and in Ju Jitsu, Kata may involve one or two persons, or feature a weapon, such as the sword or sai
As you can see he also fluctuates the spelling of Jiu Jitsu and Ju Jitsu which are different.

Remember hosting a seminar is done by many arts. If he is trying to increase his skills that is cool.

Now, if he is suddenly claiming and teaching grappling then he is BS. That would be called crappling. This is wrong IMO.

Aw snap, I missed the part about the kata! Dude, I was totally wrong about this club, go for it! Ask if they have a musical forms team for you to try out for!

TKD - but you can call me Billy!

Holy shit, in the "Grand Falls" pictures my old Kung Fu school was hosting that tournament. The bastard doesn't even give the school any credit...

Oh well, it was just point sparring, forms and two-person patterns anyway.

EDIT: Oh god, I realize what I just did. I resurrected a year old thread. Oh god. *puts on a fire retardant suit*

I think your wrong about Britt

I've just read yours and someother people threads on Britt. All I can say is you shouldn't really slam anyone on here. He's hosted some nice tournaments and I 'm a friend of his. I don't train under him but some of my crew have rolled with his boys at his past two tournaments.
We have nothing but respect for him. Yes he is a bit different and trains his own way. But so do I and thats part of the reason whey he and I get along so well.

Its cool if you and he didn't click And you don't want to train with him But that doesn't mean you should be talking smack online. If you felt that way you should say it to him face to face.

I'm not here to slam you or anything but I just didn't think it was right to talk down about someone.

Welcome to Bullshido Shanehalfyard. Unfortunately, you did what everyone who comes to an old thread to defend someone mentioned on here does. You said a lot without addressing the actual issues that were brought up. It's almost like it's genitically encoded or something. Basically, if you don't know what this site is about I would suggest more lurking and the typical "search function noob" you are bound to get. T

his is a place were frauds in the martial arts community can be discussed without the normal ego stroking that goes on in other areas of the martial arts. The original poster of this tread had some legit concerns about what was being taught, how it was being taught, and what style he was actually representing in his teachings. If you can provide some information into these issues it would be much more helpful then just you opinion of him as a person. There are plenty of people I think of highly as a person but it doesn't mean they are qualified martial artists in any way.

Also, as for others talking smack, I really didn't see much smack talking. All I see is factual information that anyone can find for themselves with some handy searching that was posted by other members based of information from his website. Also, the first head knowlege (debatable sure) of a student who worked out with said instructor. Do you have any information to add besides the usual "My teacher is the bestest in the whole world and you didn't give him/it/his martial art/etc enough time" stance that so many others pull when trying to defend someone.

Well i feel i should add something since i created the website for brit a long time ago, I think back in 2002. That was back when there was no bjj done at the club , it was just classical jiu jitsu which i enjoyed, i left before these topics discussed here were taking place.

BUT!, the quotes from the website are pretty much old, and it was something i added for a history and what goes on in martial arts. The side links in the website were made quickly and in my typing i tended to type Jiu and ju, there was no intent for different meanings. The website was not maintained or changed in many years when you accessed it for the information, since now i have removed this from the server. I still have the files on my hard drive and i can upload it if someone would like to view anything.

Brit did receive his blackbelts (1,2,3dan) in jiu jitsu, he was graded from kyoshi john therien along with others at the one of the large wkf events that are held each year (http://www.jiu-jitsu.com/english/about/kyoshi.html ). I know he has trained in many other martial arts some for years, but I am not sure on facts in that department, so the bjj part i cant say to which level was done.

For "His club was filled with trophies and the tacky Japanese knickknacks on the wall", those are all the people brit has actually met and or did some training with (excluding Jigaro Kano, founder types etc). From what i gathered from brit he was very proud of this and likes to put up pictures of people he met and or trained with. For the trophies; brit and or students actually won them. brit was/is good at weapons (Kama) where he won many trophies.

For the fighting in mixed martial arts events, yes he did some fighting in some events, and trained and worked with people who did. BUT these were small time events located on the east coast, so i doubt you will find his name in any registries for mma fighters online.

"He has pictures of a MMA Event which his instructor/student lost."

The MMA event where it says his instructor/student loss is true, but what is not known is that the other fighter who won was also his student at the time, they both made it to the final and have both competed in national martial arts competitions previously.

I am not defending or arguing anything that was stated previous, i am just posting some clarity to what was said. It has been a while since i have talked to Brit, but since many of the facts were taken off the old website I thought i should add some clarity to them.

                    ??

This is part of the problem...,.John Therien self promoted to "kyoshI" 10th dan....and all the other regular world martial arts hall of fame crap that accompanies this mess....The World Kubudo is the same type...they bring in many talented people and as always their people begin to teach what they where taught as part of their curriculae following a couple of seminars....a shame comsidering Jean Yves Therieult is an instructor with Therien, the 3 mths free class and pay for a year issues are there as well....Mc Dojo`s seem to have the same issues....this is an easy way for many "karate" Ju-Jistu clubs to "ADD" other arts....without committing to training their asses off.
This is exactly what the fangers in Ottawa have done in the past as mentioned on another thread(s)....
I met a "sempai" when I was 12 yrs old...and I remember him being at least 82 yrs young at the time...
Go to any "karate" tourney today and you will see 25-30 year old shodans walking around ?? its all about the dollar...jack--or "jacko" of all trades and master of none....
An old Judo Instructor once told a freind of mine....
"if you chase too many rabbits" "you will go hungry" this un appeasble hunger and ego that accompanies many of these..."do it all" types is prevalent in much of todays martial arts.

That's funny, I dug around Fredericton when I usto live in New Brunswick (about an hour and a half away from the city) and I never found any grappling-oriented schools. Where do you train, Shanehalfyard?

While I was there I visited the Fredericton amateur boxing club and the Maritime Martial Arts Academy for their kickboxing, both nice schools. I wasn't a fan of the other martial arts in the latter gym but the kickboxing instruction seemed solid enough. My old kung fu school has a kwoon up there, and I have heard there's a few others.

But really, to me the maritimes seemed to be pretty much a non-bullshido martial art wasteland. There were a few nice gyms but nothing decent where I usto live.

I've always wondered about that spelling of Jiu Jitsu, but, you know .... party line and such.

I'd also like to add that I'm not aware of ANY mixed martial arts tournaments in St. John or Fredericton, if you could point me in the right direction cleven I'd really love to believe that the area has something decent.

As John Therien started teaching jiu jitsu in 1968, how is it deceptive? Or do you think that after 25 years of teaching jiu jitsu, he and everyone else that have been around a long time should have to change the spelling because the Graciies are using the spelling? The" jiu" spelling is hardly unique to Brazillian jiu jitsu, and can be found in many older martial arts books.
