    Villari's Martial Arts Center

    http://vsdny.com/index.shtml

Anybody in the area (Long Island, NY) know about this school? The website itself is very awkward, there's very little mention of what they actually teach, what style, how they train etc. In fact, most of what is on there is talking about belts and kids classes. Smells very mcdojolike to me.

A friend of mine had met someone who trains there, an assistant instructor who asked her if she would like to come try it out. The assistant instructor talked about how they have 3.5 year black belt programs and how they do grappling on the weekends...

How could you possibly lose with that???

Try it out. You're probably right about it being shit, but you can't be sure until you actually see what they do. They might have a McDojo program for kids and real stuff for adults.

Ok nevermind. From that first website, they didn't make it clear what style or system they were practicing. But then once I got to the parent site, saw it was Fred Villari's Shaolin Kempo. Finding alot on this forum and others on it.

Wow.......that is f-ing horrible. Shaolin Kempo Karate- a bunch of words that sound foreign but mean jack shit........ But Villari has the super grandmaster flash gear complete with cheezy gold stripes.

Objectively, the quality varies from location to location. From everything I understand its not unlike Tiger Schulman's another LI/tri state chain. Some have really solid programs, other are pure Bullshido. From the sounds of a 3.5 year BB, it immediately falls towards the latter.

Eternal, where's your friend and what's he/she interested in? I might have some leads on some other local schools worth investigating.

Hi guys, I'm from Long Island but have never been to a Villari school. However there are a couple kempo schools around and they are all different. For example schools like Tom Ingargiolas (spelt wrong probably) spar hard, train kempo, and even cross train in kickboxing, I'm pretty sure.

Others are like, "we can't spar we'd kill you".

the one thing i see that kempo lacks is a method to its madness. Its just a collection of techniques but with no end goal. Thats why i like BJJ, they say to take him down, get position and submit him. Kempo has no gameplan from what i see, though it would probably be much better if it did.

. Kempo schools on Long Island are all varied and they def depend on the instructor. I visited 7-8 and actually trained at 3. But if its Shaolin Kempo Karate its probally all geared towards kiddies now. Ingargiolas though enters kickboxing tournys. Not only his students but he fought as well. They should be good. USSD & White Tiger target kids like they were taekwondo. Shaolin Self Defense Centers are the ones led by Ingargiola. Never trained there but seen one school and is probally the best bet.

ummm youre asking me and LI GUY 1 ojgsxr6? Well I train BJJ in Lake Ronkonkoma. Have been there for about 3 months. I also go to a 24hr gym in Patchogue to use the bags. Before this I trained at United Studios for 3 yrs.
LI Guy 1 is doing the same cause Im pretty sure that my brother could be wrong though.

The only thing deadlier than Shaolin Kempo Karate is Muay Silat Escrima Do. Its not only too deadly to spar, its too deadly to teach and is therefore in danger of extinction as its only practitioner is getting pretty old.

I dream of finding the time to do a school by school background and quality check on the various locations in NYC alone. It is such an uneven mix of highly qualified and skilled teachers to total nutcases that someone has to start sorting it out..
