    Snapped at my GM

A couple of weekends ago, my GM went to Dallas for a Grandmasters Seminar where only the 8th and 9th dans were allowed. There they discussed the future of TKD and problems that they were seeing. I was told that no "paper tigers" were allowed at this meeting since the organization is private and by invite only.

I was interested to hear what was spoken at this seminar. My GM went on to tell me that many of the instructors there see the art of TKD going down the drain due to the fact that all these schools are doing are strictly sport orient training and that techiques are suffering. The way it sounded, this group of GMs were placing blame on everything but themselves. That is when I snapped. I started telling my GM that if they want to blame the down fall of TKD on someone, they need to look in the mirror first.

I told that it was they who started the watering down of this art not their students. Their students just followed suit. As for the paper tigers, well can you blame them for seeing a quick way to make a buck without really working hard for it? Perhaps if the GM's would have made it harder to get a piece of paper then there wouldn't be any paper tigers or at least very few of them. I asked how many of these men get on the mat with their students and teach the old ways? How many of them tell a student, you are not ready for testing yet, perhaps the next testing you will be up to par? I told my GM that when I mention to him that I want to learn the old forms and I will teach Jidokwan not Taekwondo, these GM's just say that is a dead art and scoff at it. Yet they see TKD going straight down the tubes. TKD is a laughing stock of the martial arts. Where once great fighters flourished now games of hard tag prevail.

I told him he needs to tell them to stop blaming and start teaching. He does this, why can't they? Perhaps they have gotten too comfortable with the way things are and it is much more easier to sit and bitch than it is to stand up and set things straight. Amazing I didn't get bitch slapped by him.ha.ha.ha..

Oh well done with my ranting. Now I turn you over to your normally schedule program.

Not really...My GM understands my dedication to the arts and the traditional ways of things. He also knows, though I'm very respectful to my seniors, I will not be a Yes Man for them either. I have pissed many of GM's off because I have told them what I thought whether it is my place or not.

He also understands that my anger was not directed at him so much as it was to them. My GM does get on the mat with us. He still teaches about 80% of the classes. The only classes that he doesn't teach are the kids classes and family classes. This mainly due to a language barrier more than anything else.

Do you think in time the GM's that meet will start turning things around?

Will new GM's (8th or 9th dans) move it in a traditional direction?

If I was to tell you the path that WTF is wanting to take the TKD, it would make your teeth grind and shove it further down the drain. From what I am told, they are planning on allowing "open forms" in TKD competition. How it was explained to me was that it would be similar to the way the do figure skating. You will have a basic techniques required to be executed but you can just go nuts. Basically they will be doing what sport karate has been doing for years.

Will these other GMs turn things around? I have no idea. This GM organization is fairly new and of course it seems to be a Korean only club. However, I do not know that for sure. All I know is that I am going to keep pushing my luck with my GM in getting the class back to a better road. He has given me some rope to hang myself with. :)

Now don't get me wrong...I do feel competition has its place in the martial arts. It is fun teaches sportsmanship to students.

Miguksaram- I hope everything will work out with you. Its really bad if you get on the wrong side of certain people like your GM or those other GMs especially if you have to work with him in the future. There seems to be be reprocussions for things like that. With certain groups of people this could have gotten into a heavy confrontation. Glad it didnt.

Freddy, Thanks for the thoughts. I feel I have a good relation with my GM, due to a lot of factors. One being that my wife is Korean and so I have been exposed to a lot of Korean culture and I reflect that with him. Plus, as I stated, before, he knows that I am serious about my training and so he knows I am speaking from my heart and not just bitching to hear myself speak.

Don't you think "a Grandmasters Seminar where only the 8th and 9th dans were allowed" is bit absurd. I mean how many 8th 9th and 10th done are there?

It is an organization for those who have been legitemately promoted to 8th or 9th dan (meaning they went to KKW and went through a test in front of the WTF board forms, breaking, etc). That is why there were no paper tigers. (those who received their rank via payoff to a friend, or just make a piece a paper from a computer)
