However, I think I can defend myself. Maybe not as well as some of you warriors but for an average guy I'm fine. Even if you don't like the way FSD sparrs it sure taught me a hell of a lot
The average guy is any guy. Being able to defend yourself against the lowest common denominator probably won't help you. People who start violent confrontations tend to be used to doing so- so you better get used to the idea the average guy that gets into fights or assaults people is not always the easy proposition you make it out to be.

My sensei has a saying. "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect". Sparring poorly will mean you fight poorly. Using poor techniques against someone using poor techniques doesn't teach you how to defend yourself at all. It just gives you the false and dangerous belief that you can.

(I just hope some jerk does'nt call it a thread drift when I do because I'm getting sick of dealing with bad tempered rude jerks.)

I'm really looking forward to it actually. I miss training.

I'm torn however because I'm totally uninterested in getting in the ring. It's just not where my interests lay. But I do want a school that teaches a MA that does work for self defense.
There are lots of schools in Ottawa that are great for self defence. FSD is not one of them. I truly believe that you typical weekend "street fighter", would obliterate an FSD pratitioner. The main reason is because the street fighter would not play into the FSD paradigm. They would not throw punches that fall short of target. They would not sit there and be double blasted. They won't stop fighting because of a biu-jee to the eye. They will not give you an arm for a takedown, phon sau, or wristlock. They won't be killed by a backfist. They will keep coming. They will beat on you repeatedly. They will grapple.

So, here is a list of schools that I think are great for self defence, and sport.

      Igor Yakimov's sambo training center.
      Bob Carver's Thai Boxing Academy
      Ronin MMA
      Ottawa Academy of Martial arts
and I have heard good things about Takahashi

I'm sure there are others, that I am not familiar with. I found trying out schools to be a blast, not to mention a real eye opener.

      Enjoy.

Anyway yeah, good question I'll bet back to you.

Maybe I am a mouth piece I sure can take a question and run with it! (Hail Satan):XXhesitan
Methinks you would garner greater credibility if you ceased the pathetic histrionic appeals to pity.

As a brief skim of this lengthly thread demonstrates, there have been a few "sock puppets" of instructors and students. Thus, the concern that you are not what you say you are is understandable.

I, for one, could care less. I judge posters by their posts and have little interest in "sock-hunts." Fools reveal themselves as such in time.

There actually have been recommendations pepper'd through this Epic; however, you may wish to consider the Tried and True Method--goeth thou to Newbie Town and post the following:
          • 1. Greetings!
            2. I am a former FSD'er who wants to find a good school in ______
            3. My interests in MA are:
            • A. Basic Self-Defense
              B. A Good Work-Out
              C. TO KILL YOU!! KILL YOU ALL!!!
              D. Pick up chicks.
              E. Explore grappling
              F. Learn t3h d3adly
              G. Start my own cult
              H. Learn a striking-art

Et cetera. Posters are actually very helpful. When I have more time, I might, for example, like to formally study t3h d34dly grappling arts; I will certainly PM/Post such requests for recommendations.

Then enjoy the rest of the site. Reasonable posters are treated reasonably. I am not "blaming you" for some to the "triffle on the harsh side of 'strict'" responses you received; I am just reminding you of the sensitivity posters on THIS thread have to the subject. Also understand why they would want it "devoted" to the subject of FSD.

thereis not much info on it anyway, my start date, payment plan, etc.

but i still prefer not to post it public, i know, i sound like a sissy, lol
Are you suggesting it would be to taxing on the FSD brain trust's detective skills to figure out which English speaking only 26 year old 6'6" 270 lb student that left during the one month trial period you were? "Cuz it is not nice to say things like that about other people.

I felt you were a mouthpiece and asking questions for someone else.

See, Shadow posts are very similar to Gerry Mansfield. Asking questions, cordial, apologetic, then boom they go nuts. You are much milder but, then you made the crack about USA and Vietnam. This is why I thought you were a mouthpiece.

Look you and a few others deal with negativity bad and lash out. If you look at the people that started/continued discussion on this thread, they are all from Canada.

Factor in the pro-fsd students and there is a very minor presence of outside Canada posters.

Not to pick on you but this comment scares the hell out of me. This is an ideology placed into your thought pattern by sJP and his clowns. I have spoken out against this for years in MA and will continue to voice my opinion regarding this.

The odds of you defending your family or person against an 'average guy' is slim to none. Fact is most guys who are 'average' at street fighting aren't going to attack you. Sure from time to time you might be in a situation where the defense against the dumb drunk guy punch will work, but this is by far and away the rarity.

I have bounced for over 10 years and done security for events and some small event more person orientated work. The 'average' guy that I dealt with was not someone who was clueless in a fight, quite the opposite. You ask for examples of why FSD won't work? Well if these videos are indicative of the style of fighting you've been learning then I'm sorry to break it to you but you wouldn't last past the opening punches in a fight.

In a planned assault the odds of you dealing with a mugger or assailant who makes a living doing this are very high. Just like you become very good at your job with some experience and training, so do these guys.

Street fights are like car wrecks, you don't know when they're going to happen and you get very little warning. The concept that sJP is pushing where by two men square off and exchange words is fiction and more suited to shitty MA films like Kung Fu Love!

How do I know what I do works? Because I have used it and it has saved me from serious injury. Simple.

Just like the first guy to test drive a bike is the guy who did the breaks, sJP should stop hanging out in men's rooms looking for fights and start hoping that they never are in a real fight.

Joslin's is an excellent school and only a 6-8 hour drive from Ottawa to Hamilton, depending on traffic with Toronto being inbetween and all.
