I'm sure TKD and Karate styles still are the top.....according to my phone book in metropolitan Toronto.

    "BJJ is the new fad..."
meaning BJJ is the new thing to go and train in. Not that it is the biggest attended MA right now.

It seems WT is rather popular in Europe eh?
You guys have commercials for martial arts?
i've never seen on TV in North America a commercial for a martial art

    brand-it's "cite" :)
Edit: :) I am Super Canadian Dictionary Man!
Edit2: Now your sentence doesn't make any sense! :) heheh

And yes i would be curious about statistics......imagine that, a world demograph of MA, that would be very very interesting!

What always amused me was the fact that the current NHB gloves were first introduced by none other than 'Tank' Abbott. After he started crushing people, more dudes started wearing them (Don Frye was the second big name to wear them if I remember right). People always bitch about the early UFC being 'pure' (ie no gloves, lots of knees and elbows, etc...) and being more unpredictable than recent UFCs but I've always thought the old UFC was more of a showcase for a select few. Putting Royce, Ken or Severn against some karate black belt? Yeah, that outcome was hard to predict. Until the strikers started getting smarter (enter Maurice Smith), the old UFCs were actually kind of boring. Lots of amatuers and a few good ground-fighters.

Personally, I like watching the new Prides and UFCs, no strategy seems to really dominate, the skill level is getting way up there and even the big names get their asses kicked every now and then. How many times has the Heavyweight crown (or any other UFC title for that matter) switched hands in the last five years? Lots of talent out there, just itching for a shot.

"I had once talked to Billy Conn, the boxer, about professionals versus amateurs - specifically street fighters. One had always heard rumors of champions being taken out by back-alley fighters. Conn was scornful. "Aw, it's like hitting a girl," he said. "They're nothing."

it is not really style vs style so much now,

As far as the Wing Tsun vs TKD for most popular art is concerned:

While WT may be the single largest organization in the world (I'm taking your word on that, I haven't seen any numbers...), there are still many more people learning TKD. Last I checked, WT has roughly 300,000 students or so (the biggest percentage of these in Europe I believe...). TKD however, has at least a couple million. The main difference is that TKD isn't run by one big organization like WT is. There are nearly as many different TKD organizations as there are TKD students.

i see your prime motivation as getting BAJI! into the top. :)

totally, when losing means so much...
still it would be a great rep to have, going like 10-0 and teaching MA, people would show up and listen to you

I've been gone a few days, but to add my 2c:
Actually just rewatched Shamrock vs Royce 2.

Shamrock did fight cautiously, but that fight was his. At the start of the first overtime he landed a nasty punch that knocked Royce silly and opened up a bad cut underneath his eye.

At the end, Royce had to be helped around, and was looking spent, while Shamrock was parading around the ring with his arms raised.

If the fight had judges to declare a winner it would have been Ken that time. Royce never fought in UFC again, and didn't fight anywhere for over 3 years.
