Taijiquan NOT so victorious in MMA event?

    Look what I found out:

" Northern Lights Tai Chi by Bruce Pack. ( Tai Chi Chuan/Chi Kung, Wujiquan Kung Fu, NHB training ) "

A very robust match with a couple of technical fighters. Both were able to land knees to the body. Jeremiah caught Jason with some conbinations which soon had Jason bleeding from the nose. From here on, Jeremiah dominated the match and went on to win by split decision.

I tried to email you but apparently the message never made it. I just wanted to let you know how reassuring it is to see Ju Jutsu being combined with Tai Chi Chuan. I think you would be interested in my Wujiquan syllabus as it graduates students much alon the same lines as what you are doing. Stay loose and remember, HAVE FUN! Sincerely, Bruce Pack
He uses taichi with BJJ it seems, but I bet you he uses other striking principles too... it is NHB training. It's still excellent to see people mixing grappling with TMA and NHB training (that is, if there is any TMA invloved in the NHB training), I'd like to see more results from that fighter, was his first Pro MMA fight I think.

Hmmm. In my taijiquan, form is sometimes know as *posture* form. The one reason for this is that each step is not exactly a technique like karate kata but there are number of technique hidden for each step. For example, Brush knee twist step can manifest into block, strike and throw.

Lot of beginner taijiquan students who are interested in martial aspect of arts therefore ask a lot about application.

My instructor once told us about one senior instructor who is know to be bit of tough/rough guy.

When his student asked him about application of one step, he said "Ah, that is this" and he hit his student's chest hard, BOM. Student while recovering from pain of his chest asked again, "What is this step supposed to do then". Then the instructor said "Ah, this one is this" and hit this student again in the chest in the exactly the same way.

In taijiquan form practice, you are not learning that punch or that throw or that lock or block. The idea is that for every move, you adhere to the principles of taijiquan. The *posture* form, pushing hand and various other exercise are there to teach taijiquan principles rather than techniques to the students.

So frankly, I can't care if the guy won MMA event using grappling or striking or joint manipulation. Important question is whether he manage to apply the principles to any technique he did. We wont be able to tell that from photo.

he trained in bjj and mt but fought in nhb so obviously he only used his nhb training.

This is the reasoning process you guys are using. Like Boyd said what's wrong with cross training?

        go on osiris uesed what!?!?!? <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Cross training is excellent (I do it) it's just when we get "this {STriking system] is ALL you need" etc, or "you only need this type of system (i.e. striking only/mainly)".

He trained in taichi and nhb. Looks like nhb, he trained in nhb, so therefor he probably used...
No Holds Barred is a rule system, sir. He didn't go into the fight wielding a giant sign saying "ALL COMBATANTS MUST REFRAIN FROM ENGAGING IN UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT".

Nothing. But I really dont think he used much taichi.
How do you know? Where's your proof? The fact is, he could've been using Taichi principles in the way he moved, his posture, his footwork, his MINDSET...

I went to a kali class recently. I moved my feet the way I move in judo, partly because that's how I've been trained to move, and partly because judo footwork focuses on balance and solid stance. Just because I didn't pull an ippon seoinage doesn't mean I wasn't using judo. My posture came from my judo training.
If I stepped into a ring right now for a NHB fight, and I performed a double-leg and a kimura lock, would you say it was judo, bjj, shooto, catch-as-catch-can, etc? No, those techniques are very broad ranging. Step back a bit and consider PRINCIPLES. Some principles span across almost every martial art. Good stance to generate power, footwork, etc. Just because Taichi guy didn't pull a "Rising Moon Elbow" in his match doesn't mean he didn't use the principles he learned in Taichi to fight, principles like stance, posture, footwork, and generating power.

Deus nailed it. Damn tired of hearing people say "that's not Taiji, that's NHB" or "that's not karate, that's MMA" because it puts their panties in a bunch to see traditional martial arts doing more harm than flower arranging.

That's because all good TMAs secretly practice Muay Thai and just lie about what style they take. Apparently.

Funny thing about taiji, I can't say you'd ever see it being used in a photo. Do you expect him to start performing the form? What do you know/have you seen of taiji other than the form? To echo Merc, Deus nailed it. Not saying taiji is the be all end all (heaven forbid!), just that your argument is shite. Oh, and using TKD to demonstrate your point doesn't help, it's far more technique-based than principle-based.

                        Flame on.

btw you can't learn Tai Chi from photos....TKD you mostly can, hence you can't really tell TC in photos (unless it is your stereotypical old guy dressed in silks and shoes looking peaceful)

Yeah, I'd agree with that. On video you *might* see a thing or two that you could point to and say "that's taiji", but it'd probaly be a rare occurance. FWIW, I use my WC in MT sparring all the time, but you'd rarely see it. Another WC guy might notice, but I doubt anyone else would.
