Hi. You are reading an archive of the legendary Bullshido forums, from 2002-2020. Please visit our NEW and (arguably) improved forums at https://forums.bullshido.net.
(Or don't, this is just an announcement and nobody's holding a gun to your head.)
Damn yo. Well, at least he got some sense. Did he talk some smack afterwards?
No, but he's now after entering the Scottish Open in judo, which might prove interesting. Some quite good people will be fighting there, and I know a very decent black belt who's not entering on the grounds he'll get mashed, so I look forward to hearing what happens.
He did provide me with the training times of a local BJJ/Muay Thai place I've been trying to track down for a while with little success as all the details I've found out about them online proved to be outdated. So that's a bonus.
No, seriously though, if this isn't gonna inspire some BJJ-nutriding then I don't know what is - and JUST as I was about to take up some judo...BTW, how was his conditioning, had he toughened up? Was his manly physique still pasty and white? Was there a significant difference in weight/muscle between the two of you? And - unless it reads in your profile and I seem like a complete idiot - how long have you been doing judo?
Oh, so many questions.

Reason: clarification of a question

He'd stopped whining about things hurting, which was good. I didn't take a good look at him in the changing rooms, so can't really answer the physique question. Weight/muscle was fairly even. He might have had an edge, but not much.
And that was ne-waza. He did get thrown about a bit by a teenage brown belt who's about the size of a small ten-year-old. But this is a scarily good small teenage brown belt, who'd own me too, and he did really quite well in stand-up as far as takedown defence went, adopting a very upright classic judo posture. Apparently he trained judo at some point when younger, but his throwing consisted mainly of countering people who overcommitted to an imperfect throw. Not that that's a bad thing, I'd have been happy with countering some of the people he fought.
Did he by any chance tell you why he came back to your club? Was it a one time appearance or...?
BTW, I have a (Finnish, like me) friend who studies at the university in Edinbourgh and he's always telling everybody to visit. Apparently it's a nice town with plenty of overpriced pubs. Oh, SAY it isn't so-oo!!!
Awesome thread. + goes to you just for admitting that when he came back he handled you. That's freaking fantastic. Annoying while he's doing it, maybe, but we can read between the lines, and the respect is there.
And it's a good feeling to respect someone today you couldn't respect yesterday.
I dunno what to say. I guess he just trained more often than you did. How often is your Judo class?
PL
Heh. Twice a week currently, though I can get three times a week in university term-time since I'm usually at a university club. Club was off for a couple of weeks recently though to give the instructors a sanity-restoring holiday. BJJ trains four nights a week but I don't think he makes all of them.
Besides, we do do less than 50% ne-waza, and a fair amount of that's turtle stuff, so even though I'm a guard judoka, chances are he's had more teaching from the guard than I have.
Or maybe he just learns faster. All I can say for sure is that he was the better man on the day.

Yeah, it's probably that he trains probably 90% ground and you don't. Next time he tries anything fancy, punch him in the face. That'll put him in his place.
