                  Let me get this straight (for my peace of mind). I've never taken a strictly 'traditional' MA. When you do a kata and/or form, are the steps always memorized? I kind of assumed they were like the combos you practice while shadowboxing but I guess I could be wrong. The biggest combo I ever practice is maybe 4 steps long. Anything past that is probably wishful thinking, at least for me.

                  If you are doing a 50-step (or more) kata, I would question the value it holds for building fighting skill. You're probably better off doing push-ups in that case. Which reminds me, I see a lot of comments on how a horse-stance builds leg strength and stability. Personally, I would rather do plyometrics, kettlebells or real squats if leg conditioning was my goal. Standing in an exaggerated stance that I would never use against another fighter seems, how should I word this, a bad habit pattern to fall into. Like I said, I've never really trained in those kind of styles, so I'm just on the outside looking in.

                      I asked the same question, and was accused of being a comic-book obsessed adolescent...I still haven't gotten an answer.

                      Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the fuck I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

                        Kata is a series of defensive blocks and counters against imaginary opponents.

                        You basically memorize a pre-set pattern of ancient movements and KIAI your way through, just like in the Karate Kid. I've done plenty of kata and even competed in it.

                        It still is worth jack shit when your talking about martial arts for self defense. The only thing its good for is fun, if you like that sort of thing.

                            I don't see how practicing moves in a kata makes them automatically worse than moves you practice individually. Oh wait, KIAI! I get it!

                              PD, what style did you practice and what kata did you compete with?
                              Kata competition is the worst thing that ever happened to karate.

                                I've only performed Kyokushin kata in competiton. The only competition I've enteres for forms in the Empire State Nationals. I've performed form once in the C.O.C. but that was a random thing.

                                Karate is just a one sided art. There is no need to practice kata anymore. You gain nothing from its practice that you cannot gain in practice of another kind.
