    Aikido Question: School of Ueshiba

    okay,

i'm going to a seminar tomorrow just for the hell of it.

anybody know anything about schools of ueshiba?

my instructor mentioned something about weapons work, i hope he was wrong cause anything besides tanto-dori bores the crap out of me.

i guess the guy teaching is a 7th dan, so it should be pretty interesting and i get to leave my shitty town for a couple of days.

ASU (Aikido Schools of Ueshiba), it's my group and I've always had good experiences. Generally the weapons work in ASU (from Saotome Sensei) is just used to help show where the open-handed techniques come in. WHo's doing the seminar? For instance, we learn to perform a yokomenuchi cut with a bokken to help us know how it feels to apply a sankyo to a takedown. THere are paired kumitachi sets with jo and bokken but like I said, it's just tools to learn proper ma ai (distance and timing). It's not for everybody, but I think it can be a nice change of pace sometimes. Usually though a light bulb goes off in my head and I can relate it to a empty-hand technique that I'm doing whether it be using my arms or just my footwork.

Thanks for the info. TNK. It will definitely be different, I'll try not to get my head cracked by a bokken.

Hey, you're seeing Ikeda Sensei. You're very, very lucky! They say that he's awesome. I hope you have a good time. ASU aikido is generally very adaptive (oyo henka) and likes to defend themselves against different styles so you might see some pretty cool and different things.

BTW in case you want to know more about my org. www.asu.org

Mitsugi Saotome is very skilled and a great teacher. I visited his dojo in the DC area in the early 1990s and had an excellent time. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly.

Saotome Sensei was also one of Ueshiba's uchideshi.

With a flailing swing that's so general, it's much easier to just stand still and let it bounce into the cheap seats.

say what? tell that to the shodokan guys!

actually our group is affiliated with the Hombu Dojo, Saotome Sensei (our shihan) was an uchideshi with O'Sensei for 15 years, when he died Saotome Sensei was the head instructor at Hombu, he then decided to come to the US in the 70's to spread aikido to the masses on his own (aikido politics), but now we're back in the fold and work alongside the USAF
