If you want to get technical about it, the Jedi are a fusion of Samurai and Shaolin Monks; in fact, I would say they resemble Samurai only in their weapon of choice. Like the Shaolin Monks, they are a religious order who sometimes get dragged into political affairs. The Hidden Fortress is pretty close to the final cut of A New Hope, but it is more like The Phantom Menace. But Kurasowa influences are all over Star Wars. The Cantina scene comes from Yojimbo, and there are smatterings of other references to his movies.
Lucas almost had to buy the rights to Hidden Fortress, then he tinkered with the script a bit to make it not such an obvious influence.
Of course, you can't discount John Ford's The Searchers, either. Darth Vader is partially based off of John Wayne's character in that movie. In fact, when Anakin is overlooking the Tusken encampment in Attack of the Clones, it's shot for shot from The Searchers.
And Toshiro Mifune was the orginal choice to play Obi-Wan Kenobi, but his English wasn't good enough.Comment

You know, when I was a freshman in college, this dude used to walk around campus dressed in the jedi robes and shit. He tried growing the beard, but it never quite covered his face properly. He even took on an apprentice. They used to "spar" with sticks in a field (I guess cause they couldn't get their hands on any lightsabers). This chick used to go to high school with him and according to her; the poor guy was under the impression that he was a jedi. It was really sad. I mean his life had to be all but ruined.
So as far as I'm concerned, these people are just as bad as any other purveyor of bullshido out there and should be held accountable as such.Comment
