    Self appointed BJJ Blackbelt?

Hi everyone. I am a boxer looking to learn BJJ. Has anyone here heard of Scott Lewis out of Chaos Bjj? Apparently he attended the Gracie Academy and went all the way to Brown Belt. At some point he left and decided he was Black Belt level and awarded himself one. He has a student here in California who provided me with this info. The student was a Purple Belt at the Gracie Academy and now is a Brown Belt under Scott Lewis.

I have attempted to reach Scott Lewis to confirm this but have been unsucessful. The student seems compitent to teach but tge whole thing sounds a little weird. Is the self promotion ever done in the bjj world and not frowned upon? I dont want to start my BJJ career by steping in a pile of drama dog crap

Do you mean this Scott Lewis right here: http://kombatarts.com/Instructors/ScottLewis/index.html

Because that guy is listed as a blackbelt under Wagnney Fabiano. That should be reasonably easy to check out.

There are two Scott Lewis's. He was the first guy I checked out too. Apparently this is the OP's Scott: http://www.chaosbjj.com/instructor-bio/scott-lewis-1

Which to the OP's credit... is pretty vague... it states who he trained under but never mentions who gave him his black. Which I think is slightly odd. Most BB are pretty proud of who gave them their BB, right?

Uh I am pretty sure there's different Scott Lewises,

KombatArts Scott Lewis is my BJJ teacher (when I train) and he is a real BJJ BB and I saw Leo Santos give him his BB

I don't know if this helps but there is no mention of Scott Lewis BB under the Gracie Academy or IBJJ, btw.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXkTKN7qnmg <--- Here he is competing at Grapplers Quest in the black belt division and getting schooled by Demente. Admittedly Demente can make a lot of legit blackbelts look like noobs, but Lewis didn't look that great...

I sent an email to the school real quick asking who awarded him his BB.

He'll post when he gets one just come back periodically and check without posting or bumping the thread.

Emails to big organizations can be notoriously slow if they respond at all.

According to the Chaos Martial Arts website, "BJJ Senior Instructor" Bill Copp "holds a black belt under Scott Lewis." So is Scott Lewis promoting others to BJJ black belt as well as claiming that rank for himself?

He is, I've left them a voicemail and sent an e-mail to the org asking who awarded Mr. Lewis his rank. I have not yet had a response.

http://gracieacademy.com/belt_holders_rank.asp says no. Then again, he might have been removed if he awarded himself a BB, but...

You too can get the rank you've always coveted!

                            Man...this gets worse every week.

Having studied BJJ for 12 years, and currently without a higher rank to teach (Left my instructor last summer for a difference of opinion) i will be a Brown until i find someone else to train under. I've held my brown for five years, and would NEVER give myself a black belt ranking.

I was close to promotion (overdue in my mind), however had some issues i wasn't happy with so left the school.

So to answer the earlier question, no promoting yourself to black belt is not a good idea and you will be called out on it.

Having a simular issue and started a thread about it as well, i will research yours as well, best i can!
