Crystal Healing: Where did this even come from

I'd like to address what, in my opinion, the Grand High Motherfucker of Them All when it comes to dumb ideas: Crystal Healing.
Gems 4 Friends (http://www.gems4friends.com/therapy.html) informs me that crystals can vibrate your aura back into place, like a metaphysical massage chair.
What I'm particularly curious about is this: how in the world did anyone ever come to consider that being around pretty looking rocks can affect one's health? Who first propogated this hypothesis? Why did anyone believe them? To me, Crystal Healing rivals Furry Conventions in terms of bizarre things that seem like they just shouldn't exist.

I used to feel great after doing some chrystal, but in hte end the comedowns weren't worth it.

Standing in the Urinals of a Barracks on Wednesday night, I know what you mean. They all had a piss pad with the message AF Compulsory Drug Testing....so you're right, it ain't worth it.

This is one that probably dates all the way back to when our ancestors were hunting with obsidian axes & the hight of fashion was hanging pelts on your shoulders.

Oh shit, I hope I just didn't waste a lot of money building that crystal pyramid in my back yard. It was kind of a bitch nailing that horse shoe above the door.

I don't know much about crystals, but I would like to aspire to someday be declared Grand High Motherfucker of something.

Are you sure you want to fill that spot so quickly? I can think of a few rival ideas -- homeopathy, for example, or Reiki, or Scientology.

I remember somebody who was right into it

She showed me some roze quartz, a HUGE piece to "remind her to love difficult people".
It was heavy and jagged, so naturally I thought it would be good to have to pulp their skulls as a backup plan.

Or the heads of your enemies from the ends of sharpened sticks. The crystal healing crap does date back to primitive times and cultures when humans didn't know better. However, like ocean front property in Tennessee, people today still go for this sort of thing.

The only crystal healing that works is that which is used to focus various strengths of laser.

Agree. Back then it was because people didn't know better. Now its a way for assholes to extort money from gullible hippies. Just like dim-mak, it will seem to work if you believe in it. I'm really not sure if I feel bad for the hippies.

The placebo effect has been helping people peddle snake oil for centuries.

Even apes know how to make a poultice out of leaves and several other behaviours which could be termed "medical".

Next to that, does a crystal seller know less than a chimp?

Of course crystals have healing potential: they're pretty and are easy to spend down time contemplating. Both of these ease the mind and relieve stress. The special crystal energy thing, though? Yeah, that's nonsense.
