Film should get its superficial whoring ass hands off of martial arts unless they're going to treat the subject half-decently such as in Bourne Identity. It perpetuates lies that give martial artists a bad name and help set the stage for mcdojos.

Kill Bill: One of the best movies ever made...

Boyd: notice how i wasn't making any generalized necessity claims about film. all i was saying was that given the use of excessive violence, it would be considered art in my view if you use it for satirical purposes or do something else meaningful with it - besides just displaying it and reveling in it for no apparent reason. i don't think there's much art in that. now, Kill Bill may have this meaning through "a homage to 70s kung fu cinema," but given that those films essentially sucked ass (with the possible exception of enter the dragon), building on them to produce a film some of you are masturbating to would be very difficult to pull off. but that's a slight tangent since i need to actually see the movie to draw those conclusions. i'm remarking on excessive violence in film and the cultural connotation.
I realize the BI comment was not specific enough. The scene i was thinking of was the kali one with that guy from italy (in which they fight in bourne's apartment). there was no wirework/flying/wielding HSN katanas. it was not a completely realistic representation but i thought it was pretty good for a movie. As for the rest..the sarcasm was noted and I remembered the more unrealistic scenes.
Finally, Boyd, your personal attacks are probably more of a reflection of your self-hatred and disaffection than any kind of sound reasoning in regards to my own nature. Grow the fuck up.

'Can you think of anyone (caucasian) who could be THE martial arts star today?'
(Sadly) I can't think of anyone more qualified than Ryan Phillippe who according to his bio at imdb is a black belt in TKD(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000202/bio). Well it's something at least and he is a decent actor. I wonder how a fighting flick with him would turn out.

It occured to me while I was watching Kill Bill that sonny Chiba was not the actor that I thought he was .. I mean that I saw another actor once who I thought was Sonny Chiba. That guy sucked ass and so I never saw another Sonny Chiba film.
Seeing him for the first time in this film, I realized that .. I've never seen this guy before.
Reading that he was a student of Mas Oyama, I really want to check more of his stuff out now. What are his best films?

We saw it today...
I am not sure whether it was devastatingly horrible or a brillian masterpiece. Either way it is a must see. It reminded me of a train wreck... I couldn't stop watching.
Uma Thurman needs a sammich, I am taking up a collection to send her one if anyone is interested. That chick looks sick. If you watch closely, you can see that she can BARELY hold her own body weight! Lucy was GREAT imo.
