Who Wants To Be a Superhero?

Because who Reality t.v. wasn't degrading enough by forcing people to eat buffalo testicles, the Sci Fi channel will air a new series which pits comic book LARPers against each other for a t.v. series, a superhero makeover, and a comic. I shit you not.

Sci Fi Network has ordered six episodes of the reality series from Bruce Nash ("Meet My Folks") and comic pioneer Stan Lee for the 2006-07 season. The project will feature average Joes pitching their superhero ideas (in the costume of said hero to boot) to a panel of celebrity judges who have played onscreen superheroes. Semifinalists will undergo a "superhero makeover"--with a professional artistic gloss overseen by Lee--and compete in various stunts and challenges that mimic comic book derring-do. The winner will then be eligible to have his or her idea developed and expanded by Lee's team, possibly for a comic book spinoff, AND maybe a television show.

              WTF?

How is anyone going to come up with a superhero that is
              1. original
              and
              2. not shit?

All of those peoples characters on that video seemed to be a rip-off of some other superhero or just plain fucking piss poor. Or both.

Everybody knows that nerds are the least original people in the world. They just take everybody else's ideas and make them furry.

                  Greetings.

Know what would be a cool superhero? A thief in a fictional middle age sort of world and really he's an antihero and he reluctantly ends up saving the world from technology cults using his quick wit and blackjack and bow and arrows and shit.

                  Also, he's furry.

I am a comic book fan, ever since I was a kid, though I don't get to read them nearly as much as I used to, so yes I will probably be watching when it comes on later this July. The down side is that this may become a new trend in reality TV, which IMO already spun out of control years ago, and we will start to see more and more LARPERS in reality TV based shows. Be ready for "So you want to be Dungeon Master" probably already slated for this fall followed by "Shinobi Lord: Who will be Hatsumi's heir" in the winter.

In any case if their are any TV exec types around here, I already have a TMA based reality show all thought out, written up, and registered if your looking to fill a fall slot. Yes I am pimping my own work, becuase if I don't who will.

It's really funny you would mention a ninja reality tv show. I pitched one to ABC and NBC my senior year of high school. The show would test the various American ninja schools against each other in theft, assasination, stealth, and other ninja shit. I thought it would be funny as hell to see housewives and LARPers scaling walls. Apparently they didn't because neither network returned my e-mails.

                            I am a superhero. Don't tell anybody.

Yeah I understand what you mean. I tried contacting Spike TV directly and got no response. The main thing I've learned is if you don't have an agent who can get you in the door it becomes very difficult to pitch a new show. Of course you don't want to give them your show concept outright in hopes that they are interested because if they are then they could just steal it. You have to keep everything close to the vest, that's why I got mine registered with the writers guild to provide myself with some protection should I ever get a network to look at it.
