What the HELL is this thing?

OK, so my wife bought this...thing...at an Op Shop (for those tho don't know, this is a second-hand chop run by a charity). She likes it, and I think it's interesting.

    But what is it?

It's wooden, it has hinges, and it looks like some Balinese-crafted woodwork. We were told it was a bookshelf, but I'm not so sure. It has a small nail in the back, so perhaps it is supposed to be hung.

I hereby ask Bullshido posters: what is this thing?

I fully expect most of your answers to be stupid, dismissive, vulgar or simply insane, and I welcome it all. Still, perhaps amongst the lunacy there will be some truth.

    Any takers?

I think it's used by the hippie gynecologists.

    Warn your wife.

Deary me. I mean, the splinters...

Are you sure it's a pair of fixed bookends? Would it just sit on top of a table, shelf, cabinet, or some such thing? It seems so small and clunky. Why bother with the hinges?

maybe it's a paper towel holder.

What an awful thought. There's something painfully tacky about that. Even if it is a paper towel holder, there's no way that's how it'll end up.

Perhaps it's a cradle for irresponsible parents?

              Of course.

              That would explain the hinges...

              Argh.

Well at least it's a good conversation piece.

The hinges are for the arms, which are supposed to hold the baby down while you extract oil from it.

                      Nope, I'm not.

But I've seen bookends like it before (but they were not fixed/static by any means, you could adjust the legnth of them).

                      Yes, and who knows?

I just know that people buy them (note: Not nearly as cool as the one that you showed, I sell a lot smaller version of them, IF they are the same).

                        That's so wrong.

Just before reading this I was holding my baby boy.

                        So very, very wrong...

And I know you went and set him inside of it just to see if he would fit. :D

Maybe it's for like hanging a dead animal?

                              Here is one:

                              On ebay:

The hinges are for folding it flat for storage or what not (beating hippies).
