The Prickly Pears are in bloom

Here is a little piece of my world. I know that many of you live in other parts of the world and have never even seen a prickly pear cactus in real life. Well, they are in bloom again so I thought I would share some pics with y'all.

I know, flowers are gay, but these a CACTUS flowers so they are bad ass.

Anyway this time of year the wild flowers are blooming like crazy around here and so are the prickly pears.

I put a food sicker on it as kind of a joke, but you can buy cactus in the grocery store here, and they are not too bad to eat. Yes... they take the thorns off!

People often tell me that I fail to see the gravity of the situation.
I see the gravity, and I say...

Step right up folks and watch me defy gravity!

So do you reckon that these are the kind of flowers to offer to MMA girls ? ;-)

Joke? I love prickly pear fruit. It tastes great, especially as a margarita flavoring. I am still trying to find some wine made from the stuff, but no luck so far.

The fruits also make wonderful projectile weapons, especially when ripe enough to explode on impact.

                        Prickly pear is great.

                        Agave is even better.

Awesome pics, man. :) We got a few growing here in sunny Florida too, but they generally don't get much bigger than say the size of a lunchbox in the suburbs where I live.

Also, the big thorns are no problem, it's those teeny little splinter-sized ones that are a real pain.

You can also eat the pad. Its a trad. mexican dish called nopales. Tastes kind alike green beans. My grandma used to make them in the spring when they are tender.
