'Kung Fu Hustle' wins big at Golden Horse awards
    By MIN LEE

KEELUNG, Taiwan (AP) - Kung Fu Hustle, Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow's story of a group of dormant kung fu masters who resurface to battle gangsters, won best picture, best director and three other prizes at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards ceremony. But Chow didn't show up.

Hong Kong's Aaron Kwok and Taiwan's Shu Qi received top acting honours in the presentation ceremony late Sunday - breakthrough wins for stars better known for their good looks than acting credentials. Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou, one of the Chinese pop world's biggest acts, signalled his arrival as an actor by winning the best new performer award for his portrayal of a street car racer.

With its five Golden Horse awards, Kung Fu Hustle has thoroughly dominated the 2005 Chinese film contest circuit. It won six awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including best film.

Chow was represented by Barbara Robinson, managing director at Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, which was one of the movie's backers.

Robinson said Chow "has something else going on," without elaborating.

"We were pleasantly surprised winning that many awards," she said after the awards ceremony.

Chow's co-star in the movie, Yuen Qiu, who played one of the kung fu masters whose cover is a no-nonsense, loud landlady, won best supporting actress. Kung Fu Hustle also won for best visual effects and best makeup and costume design.

A sequel is in the works, Robinson said.

Kwok won best actor for playing a burnt-out police officer still obsessed over his missing wife in Divergence. Shu was honoured for a versatile performance in famed Taiwanese art-house director Hou Hsiao-hsien's Three Times - three love stories set in three different eras. Shu was an innocent pool hall hostess enjoying puppy love, an emotionally suppressed courtesan and a carefree pop singer who juggled romantic relationships with a man and a woman.

Both Kwok and Shu had been considered acting lightweights. Shu once appeared in pornography. Forty-year-old Kwok, one of Chinese pop's Four Heavenly Kings in the 1990s, has struggled with both his music and acting careers.

Both were emotional after accepting their awards.

"Making movies with Hou (Hsiao-hsien) is really, really tough. The pressure is immense. I also lost a lot of things," Shu said. She later added she was so immersed in the characters it made her unhappy.

In a lengthy thank-you speech to reporters backstage, Kwok said he's transitioning to a bona fide actor.

"Beginning with Divergence, I completely put down the Aaron Kwok people expect to immerse in the character, to become a real actor," he said.

Chou was named best newcomer for Initial D, a movie about street car racers based on a Japanese comic book.

Veteran Taiwanese actor Ge Heung-ting, who founded an actors' union in Taiwan, was awarded a lifetime achievement prize.

In an impressive performance at the presentation ceremony Sunday, Taiwanese pop star Chang Hui-mei sang a medley of a dozen movie theme songs.

No doubt, one of the greatest masterpieces ever made.

I prefered Hustle to Soccer. It was lighter, moved quicker, and I liked the action sequences better.

Shaolin Soccer was much funnier. The humor was much less slapstick and much more clever. The spin on soccer kung fu was excellent. Kung fu Hustle was good, but it wasn't as clever and the characters weren't as likeable.

Now, I will shun you, for you have chosen a path that I no longer can follow.

Hmmm, your lack of chi is quite noticeable, woman.
While there is mention of the "Budhha Palm" it is no more a "shaolin" technique as is the "lions roar".

it's all the same to me. Kung fu hustle didn't even have scenes of pure comedy gold like the shaolin kung fu hoyeah song, the ending of everyone in the world being a kung fu master, the shaolin crew's joking around with the taichi girl, or the awesome dance scene. Shaolin Soccer rules all over Kung Fu hustle.
