Simliar, but its a Judo one done to a guy in the turtle position, he learned it from Gene LeBell.

I can't see how Ong Bak was depicted as realistic?

Aside from the flashy elbows and knees, the clinching they did was crappy with an easy to break grip.

I might regret this, but ...

        "Best of the Best"

See, this is typical of a sport fighter. If you grew up on teh str33t you would know that you have to jump through silver hoops while running away from machete weilding mobs.

Also, and I'm curious to know since my family is watching it right now, what about Best of the Best was not ridiculous?

Best of the Best was a great sleeper MA film.

My second pick would also be The Hunted (the one with Tommy Lee Jones). There was some awesome Kali and H2H scenes in that one.

My dad grew up on teh str33t. He and my uncle used to deliver barb wire loops all over the city. He used to get mad all the time when people being pursued by an angry mob would jump through those hoops as they made their deliveries.

What ever happened to Eric Roberts? I love this movie, especially because of the one guy who shaves his beard to get faster and then gets his ass handed to him. And James Earl Jones. Gotta love that guy. Best voice of all time.

I got all misty-eyed during Best of the Best. XD

Other martial arts movies that had realistic depictions of what styles they showed?

                  Taboo
                  Zatoichi (the Kitano version)

And I seriously can't think of anything else. I really loved Prodigal Son and Magnificent Butcher, but if fights were stop-block-hop-punch-block-hop-stop-pose-kick, then, well... that'd be kinda cool.

It didn't hold a candle to any of the old ones with Katsu. I've seen about fifteen of them and I can't get enough.

                      Dude! The Karate Kid!

I mean he tries to learn karate from a book and gets his butt whupped by the local bad boys that actually train at a karate school. That right there makes it more realistic than Bloodsport.

I can't really think of any MA films with a cool realistic brawlish portrayal. I think that would kinda go against the genre wouldn't it? But Fight Club had some cool fights in it (see, not a MA film). Another great movie fighter...Bruce Willis in Die Hard was totally str33t.

Yeah, it got all dramatic with the flash-backs of his father being killed mercilessly at a Karate tournament. Then the cheesy we all can change message at the end, like Rocky IV. Gold.

I grew up with the Shintaro Katsu Zatoichi movies... I guess what really made the Kitano version for me wasn't Kitano himself, but Asano Tadanobu, who's a tremendous chanbara actor in general. As slick as the frosty-haired Kitano Takeshi was, he didn't exactly make the movie for me.

And yeah, we can all change (according to cheesy-cool fighting-sport movie science), especially when we're getting the crap kicked out of us in any form of martial arts competition. When your right eye's hanging somewhere down around your jaw, that counts as a pretty damn big change. XD

                            Movie greats

"No Retreat, No Surrender" was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Who didnt fantasize about Bruce Lee comming back from the dead and training you. Plus you get to see Jean Claude beat up.

When i was competing in local Karate Tournaments in high school i used to make sure to watch Bloodsport before a competition. One time i was headed to a tourney in Vegas and actually bought the soundtrack because i wasnt gonna be able to watch the flick. Kumite..Kumite..Kumite..Kumite...

Excalty. Or some of jean claude van damme movies as well as Exit Wounds. And maybe cradle 2 the grave. And romeo must die.
