Of course I also remember ordering the "X-ray Specs!" and the "Sea Monkeys!"*lol

I can offer this advert by Wallace W. Reumann, from 'Amazing Spiderman' #63, p21, August 1968 (its hosted on photobucket, so might be blocked by websense etc):



There's also further info on this site, which hosts another scanned ad featuring Reumann. According to the author of that article:

Reumann was not a fraud. A quick search of the net can find a host of information on the man and he appears truly influential in the promotion of martial arts in western culture.

If that is true, then presumably unscrupulous advertisers took advantage of Reumann's expertise and produced marketing of the nature seen above (thats just speculation on my part, though). This is what Black Belt has to say about Reumann (link is here, from a Tang Soo Do site, which features an 'Instructor Profile' section of which the first is dated 1965. To corroborate this, there is a google cache entitled archives/blackbelt/1965/jun65/instrprofiles which features the same information, so I'm assuming the Reumann bio is from Black Belt, June 1965):

Wallace W. Reumann, 33, is a native of New York State. He joined the Army at the age of 16 and is a career soldier. He was stationed in Japan for 51/2 years and trained there with the Japan Karate Assn. In 1957 he came home with a 5th-Dan Black Belt and founded the American Karate Federation of which he is President. The AKF presently has 27 member training schools and is affiliated with Master Tsuyoshi Chitose's All- Japan Karate-doh Federation.

In addition, he crops up on a chito-ryu site, which has this to say about him:

Two other servicemen who passed on Chitose's teachings in the USA in the 50's were Wallace Reumann and Henry (Hank) Slomanski. Wallace Reumann returned to the New Jersey area to open his dojo. He created the American Karate Federation, which grew to a 27 dojo membership. One of his top students was James Cheatham (now deceased) who in turn produced two well known fighters from the east coast, Kareem Allah and Prentiss Newton.

Finally, he also published a book, called 'Super Karate'

Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm not approaching this as an "expose" or anything. Mostly an account of early perceptions of martials arts in the US, when there wasn't a tae kwon do school on every corner and the martial arts were considered far more mysterious and magical. In a way, I guess that does address the bullshido perspective. I don't have a problem with promotion and marketing of the martial arts, but these ads certainly promised more than they could have delivered in a home course.

Fantastic! Thanks very much. I saw some of this stuff but not all of it, and I did not have that ad. Good to know some of the promoters in these ads weren't (necessarily) hucksters. Slomanski's signature graced the certificate you would receive when you took the course. I had to squint to make it out, but it's there. Interesting!

You guys helped me out when I needed information on standing small joint manipulation for something I was writing. That's why I joined.

In fact, I recommend this forum to everyone I know who needs to do MA research because you guys are eager to help with information and you provide a strong message of caution in believing "expert sources" while writing about the MA.

Thanks Meex, but when I said 'do you have an address that takes large files' I meant Mr Kelly rather than myself - I tend to use a gmail account for sending large files. But useful links nonetheless. :)
