The disturbing thing is..... They're members of a hobby called CosPlay, bit like Roleplaying, but they just dress up as their favourite manga characters and act out certain scenes.
Some of the costumes are fantasic and the chicks are hot....

        Have a look at www.cosplay.com

If you ask why I know this stuff, I'll pretend I didn't hear you. But no, I don't participate.

Wow you are a loser. DBZ is a sucky anime. It is totally marketed for little kids with the most basic of storylines. If it didn't have such good blasts and a few hard hits per saga it would be downright pathetic. I can't believe you posted this.

Come on get up, I didn't hit you that hard.

Bah. I think just about every male walking the planet that doesn't take himself too seriously still digs the cartoons that they grew up with. GI Joe, Transformers, etc. DBZ is a toon I wish I'd had when I was growing up is all.

Are the plots simple? Hell yeah. A lot of the time they're so bad it's pathetic. Are the characters 1-dimensional? Yep.

I don't care about that. Hell, G-Gundam with all its nationalistic stereotypes and bad dialogue is even worse.

Don't crucify me because I'm not a hardcore anime freak that works at Suncoast and can recite the plot of every Ranma 1/2 episode. I barely have time to post here about the shitty anime I do get to watch on occasion.

Oh god for you to say that DBZ is marketed to little kids is far from the truth.

If you have seen the actual series that came from japan with none of the bullshit that funimation added in then its a pretty hardcore anime.

No I"m not talking lots of hentai. It has cussing blood and lots of fighting and not alot of kiddie words that funimation used to broadcast to over cartoon network to satisfy us adults and the little 10 year olds who also watch the show.
I'll make one when I can find one I like.

Good point Carbon. But funimation screws it all up. But here you have to admit that it is completely geared towards kids. In Japan it was geared towards kids also. They just have a better tolerance for things than we do. And Phrost I might have came across too hard on ya. I just dont like the english version of the anime. And the characters are 1 dimensional. But I dont work at suncoast or recite Ranma 1/2 lines.

Wasn't saying you were. Just that my knowledge of anime is pretty bad. I actually wish I could get into it more with my schedule, because what I've seen has been some of the most creative storytelling in any media.

Here's the extent of my anime knowledge:

                  Akira
                  DB/Z/etc
                  G Gundam
                  Ninja Scroll
                  Princess Mononoke

and probably a few more that I caught half-way through late at night.

I actually wanted to learn Japanese at one point, but I've heard that if you're a non-native speaker, as a result of the multiple levels of implied respect, you'll end up speaking everything like a 8 year old girl.

To most otaku (I am a minor otaku, as I have not strayed too far from the mainstream), stuff like DBZ and Akira is newbie anime. If you could catch it on Saturday Anime or network television (USA network, CN before Adult Swim), then it mostly doesn't count.

Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, Ranma, NGE(or SSE, you sub-nazis), and GTO are all the shit, and I would recommend them to anyone.

Also, about Japanese, the funny thing is, all the Marine Corps guys in Okinawa or wherever learn their Japanese from bar hostesses, and when they come back here and try talking to guys like my Japanese teacher in HS, they say "Ja mata ne~!" and wave like girls(the equivalent of saying "Bye bye!" in a high pitched voice), when they should be saying something like "Shitsurei shimasu" ("excuse me, I'll be going now").

As for the implied respect, Japanese is all about verb and noun suffixes. Learn the suffixes right, and speak "formal Japanese", and you'll be set when it comes to showing the right respect to the right people.

Talking to your friend/junior "Keitaro Urashima", you'd go "Keitaro-kun" or "Urashima-kun", if he was your equal or senior, "Urashima-san", much higher, "Urashima-sama".

Verb suffixes, "iku" is "I go" informally, where "ikimasu" is more formal and "mairimasu" more formal still.

I imagine Asia or someone with more experience than me might know a bit more about this than I do and be able to add something or point out any mistakes I've made.

Please don't make me show the deep levels of my geekiness. I have an excuse I had to grow up on this stuff. I didn't want to like anime, manga, etc. but it was forced on me. (actually it really is. Almost everything is in Anime or manga style from directions as trainstations to roadwork signs.)

                            >Also, about Japanese, the funny thing is, all the Marine Corps guys in Okinawa or wherever learn their Japanese from bar hostesses, and when they come back here and try talking to guys like my Japanese teacher in HS, they say "Ja mata ne~!" and wave like girls(the equivalent of saying "Bye bye!" in a high pitched voice)

Yes this is what is refered to as learning from a PILLOW DICTIONARY. Many guys make this mistake. Men ans women speak differently and learning from one is likely to have you sounding like a girl.

To sound manly you should use such things like:
ORE or BOKU (both are informal for I/ME) instead of WATASHI or WATAKUSHI (if you say this one you are a FAG! I've never heard a straight guy use this even in formal speaking)

Kimi (You) is much pefered ove ANATA (You) unless you are talking to a girl.

                            >when they should be saying something like "Shitsurei shimasu" ("excuse me, I'll be going now").

HELL NO. For a tough robust MALE this is still wussy. JA NE. MATTA NE, or MATTA AO is much more manly.

For some reason americans just FUCK UP Cosplay. I used to go to Cosplay parties alot in Japan, it really is a easy time to bag cute Japanese girls or indugle in the favorite pastime of having them give you their panties. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> But every time I see an American do cosplay I cringe. I once say three big burly bearded men dressed as Sailor Moon characters I wanted to kill them on site!!!!!
