    TKD spinning round kick!

I was watching The Art of High-Impact Kicking, starring Hwang Jang Lee tonight. I ordered it off the Internet for like ten bucks. The film is from 1981. Here is a review:

    http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID....qx/details.htm

I bought it just because I am a fan of HJL, star of such Kung Fu film classics as Drunken Master, Snake In Eagle's Shadow, Hitman In the Hand of Bhudda, Tiger Over Wall and Hell's Wind Staff. It isn't a Kung Fu movie though, it is an instructional video on how to improve your kicking. (I knew that when I ordered it) HJL was famous for his Eagle Claw style on film (among other styles) but in real life he was a seventh degree black belt in TKD.

Anyway, he goes through eight basic kicks, then stepping, skipping, sliding and jumping. Then he goes over some combonations.

One thing I noticed right off the bat is that there were some kicks that I had not seen any American TKD guys do. One example being the spinning round kick.

    That's right, spinning round kick!

It goes off a two point pivot. You pivot on your heel and then the ball of your foot. Your rear leg is your base leg and you bring your front leg around front and around behind as you pivot on your heel, then pivot again on the ball of your foot as you execute the round kick with what was your front leg at the beggining.

Now, this looked pretty cool when Hwang was doing it so I tried it out to see if it was of any use. I was kind of sleepy so I got dizzy after a few times. I'll try it out again tomorrow. It seems interesting. I don't know that I'd ever use it unless I got real fast with it. Still, the coolness value is worth learning it.

    Q.)

Do any of you TKD guys use this in competition or sparring? Do you like it? Did you learn it in class? How does it stack up to the other kicks that you use?

This is a common TKD kick. It also goes by the name of "turn-kick-auto-van" (or something like that, I never saw it written) or tornado kick.

And no, I never used it in a competition. You have to turn your back. I don't like that. I consider it about as useful as a back-hook kick.

You need to check out the KTFO olympic video.

That's exactly the kick that was used in th olympics this year for an actual KO.

Tornado kick is spinning crescent. I don't get it, spinning round kick. So it spins around like a thai kick?

We trained all kinds of spinning crap back in my old TKD days, and I thought of one time I could use them. Say you're fighting some guy in public, and you've got him pretty winded with more sensible techs, but you want something that a) looks cool b) humiliates him and c) knocks him the hell out. Bonus points if your love interest is watching.

wondering, is there anything extra that these instructional videos offer besides what one would get in the typicall martial arts class?

                I'm not interested in a and b, just c.
But when I was doing tkd a lot of the guys in the gym where practising the tornado kick. They even practised a 720 degrees version, what seemed like a waste of energy to me, but I did admire the athletic abilities involved.

Notice the word 'practised' in my post.
There was one guy who could actually do this, but he was freakin' awesome anyway.

you don't think practicing a 720 degree kick is worth something?
Look at it another way. . .during the set-up for the kick, I step in, and grab you as you try to punch my face. The beginning of the kick sweeps your front leg, as I slam into you, I pull you closer. I continue the motion for the 720, and use the torque generated to turn and throw you (at a very sharp angle) into whatever hard surface happens to be near us. . .wall, ground, automobile, etc.

Just generating the necessary force to do the kick, is worth the effort of learning it.

No, I've done the tornado kick. I can do those until I'm dizzy. This is not quite the same thing. Your base leg doesn't leave the ground. It is kind of the same thing but different. Like I said, it goes off a two-point pivot. This isn't a jump kick.

Still, it would just be a really fancy looking KO shot for a guy who's already almost there. Powerful, sure, but I can't imagine anyone being able to throw it fast enough to use it as a normal strike. If you COULD though, I would worship you as a god.

We never learned this in class, but we did learn a spinning roundhouse that is the same thing except instead of a two-point pivot we chambered with our back leg, did a small hop and spun the front leg around for the kick.

                              Oh well.

                              I think he means:

                              Left leg forward.

twist around clockwise untill your left heel is aimed at your opponent.

shift weight onto left leg as you lift your right leg up and whip it around clockwise.

Strike with the heel or flat of the foot.

followthrough untill your right leg completes a 360 and comes back to rest where it started...unless of course the kick connects.
