That's very informative, thanks. I've always wanted to visit Vietnam and Cambodia to scope out their beaches for a nice little retirement shack in the middle of nowhere. My plan has always been to become a rural hermit near some sandy beach with clean water.

Edit: I'm aware that they do not allow foreigners to buy land but they will allow you to buy an apartment or put up a small business IIRC.

l don’t know about the whole coastline of Vietnam, but several years ago, from Nha Trang to Cam Ranh Bay every quarter mile there were billboards, COMING SOON! HILTON (or Four Seasons-or Marriot etc) RESORT! OCEANFRONT CONDOS! FINE DINING! GOLF! So beach front is going fast - my kids said motorcycling the mountains was still cheap and beautiful.

You do know it was a civil war mixed with war of Independence, right it's not like the US was not acting to benefit some of the population of Vietnam. We where not at war with Vietnam but the Communist revolutionaries. It does get a lot more complicated than that due to the role of French Colonialism in the matter. Those that benefited from it and those that did not.
The war was brutal for the Southern Vietnamese.
You can act morally superior but talk to the refugees about the horrors being inflected on them by the Vietcong.

I have some Vietnamese in my family. They were actually refugees that came over when my granddad sponsored them and supported them for a few years. His entire family comes to family reunions, Christmas, and normal visits. They sat with the family when my granddad died.

We go to Chinese new year with them at the Vietnamese church every year and have a lot of Vietnamese friends. I've not talked to a single one who is not grateful for the US help and the opportunity that the US still gives them.

But what do they know, they were just born there and lived through it.
