So much for Trump's chess playing. He was sucked in, just like Putin and Kim sucked him in.

TBH if we had just smoked Suleimani and not said shit about who did it or why, Iran would maybe have kept the war in the shadows and Iraq would have been happy with that too. They are if anything more obsessed with their masculinity than Trump, so they needed to save face. Instead Trump did Trump things, so here we are. Neither side is likely to seek de-escalation for the moment. I'd like to point out that Iran's borders include Afghanistan and Iraq though, so in terms of bullying we are pretty well set. But they are clearly hoping a limited hot war with the U.S. will galvanize their populace and cool down their domestic issues for a bit, so things are probably going to get interesting. They likely think this will make us look even worse and hopefully speed our exit from Iraq and Afghanistan so they can get back to taking over both governments. Nobody in the U.S. has much stomach for regime change in yet another country, so they are limited to worrying about a very unlikely scenario where the U.S. goes in, fucks them up, and leaves without footing the 20+ year repair bill.
