They can, but some things that still don't quite line up for me.
I am not trying to be obstinate here I am plenty willing to admit I am wrong when I am wrong.
I am certainly more along the spectrum that flight might have been targeted for some reason.
Questions that I would like resolved and will get resolved with more time durning investigation.
If hit by an Anti-Aircraft missile while climbing how was it able to try and turn back towards the airport and crash facing the airport a good distance away from impact.
Why this air craft and not any others in the sky at the time.
Why would an AA missile site be right there and why would operators whom have been watching air craft take off and land over and over again make an error.
What possible benefit does targeting that plane give anyone?
These are all things that need to be answered.

Turning back was a pilot error. It most certainly ended any chance of saving anyone on board. The pilot clearly panicked on that one(assuming he had the 11k hours that the Ukraine claimed) he should have been well beyond that mistake. As far as how it was able, that is going to depend on what kind of AA it was. I'm still doubting a TOR, as I've seen them take off half an F15(F15 was still able to land though, video below). Civilian aircraft, while not armored, are large and tend to have a lot more redundancy built in than military craft. So if it was only one missile/rocket depending on impact zone, it is a possibility.

Was this the only aircraft in the sky at the time? FlightRadar24 and a few other tracking sites show three departures scheduled for that time. I forgot to check arrivals. So it doesn't seem to have been the only one.

As far as why AA would be around an airport... many small middle eastern countries have "duel use" airports. Meaning that their airport is both for civilian and military use, thus making it a legit military target. So protect what you built.

Yeah, this is initial climb, under 10k, so plane was probably not doing more than 250kts or so, SOG. I'm assuming the video is authentic, because NYT says it is.

I think we need to wait to hear who was on the plane. Accident seems unlikely, at this point, unless the accident was in targeting the wrong plane.

Even now, it's important to keep in mind this video does not clearly show what's being concluded. We are still working on a theory with no smoking gun but maybe some circumstantial video and intel.

A better video might make things clearer, but this is low quality, amateur stuff from miles away.
