MeToo -Weaponized False Accusations, and Real Sexual Assault

The MeToo movement was a noteworthy societal movement where both real cases of sexual assault and weaponized false accusations of sexual assault were reported in noteworthy fashion because of the movement gaining moment.

Sexual assaults clearly occur by both men and women.

And there is a popular political correctness myth that false accusations of sexual assault are rare compared to real cases of sexual assault.

Recently, a member of this forum made a weaponized false accusation regarding a claim of stated pedophilia sexual preference towards a mod during a forum debate.

How should society deal with false accusation of sexual assault,

and how can this be done in a manner that does not discourage or punish those reporting real cases of sexual assault.

    Discuss....

Promptly report crimes to police, police investigate, PA decides to prosecute as appropriate.

Educate kids about consent at appropriate age in schools. Parents should too, but...

Which leads to better parenting needed.

2% to 10% of sexual assault cases in the US are proven to be false, meaning there was evidence that the incident reported never occurred.

1% to 7% of sexual assault accusations in the US have enough evidence to result in a conviction, meaning there was evidence the incident occurred and met the standards of sexual assault.

Estimates of how many accusations of sexual assault are found to be baseless, meaning a sexual situation occurred, but there was evidence that demonstrated that it did not meet the standard of sexual assault, are as high as 40%, depending on the agency reporting.

The remainder of the reports of sexual assault fall into the unsubstantiated category, meaning there was not enough evidence to make any determination at all.

We have no way of knowing how many accusations are false, and how many are true.

The rate of false sexual assault accusations is therefore likely to be much higher than 2% to 10%.

And the rate of true sexual assault accusations is therefore likely to be much higher than 2.8%.

The rate of baseless accusations seems to be well within the double digits, with variance depending on the reporting agency.

Further, sexual assaults also often go unreported, perhaps ironically even more so when men are sexually assaulted than when women are.

So, it is going to be very difficult to really pin these numbers down.

But at this point, the rate of *proven false* (evidence the reported incident never occurred),

and baseless (evidence a sexual incident occurred but was not assault)

are much higher than the rate of *proven true* sexual assault accusations.

Not a popular fact right now, but nonetheless true.

          Of course men lie.

          Of course women lie.

          Humans lie.

Anyone that suggests "all men must be believed" or all "women must be believed" is either a very great fool, or a deliberately evil person who hates one sex type or the other.

And this is why we have due process, rules of evidence, etc.

Rather than edifying that public lynch mobs represent justice, instead of group villainy.

I would add that there is not universal language and definitions used across States, Federally, and by outside groups.

That produces a very difficult to reconcile problem in presenting consolidated numbers, hence the range variance in the numbers, depending on what agency is reporting, that is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon...

One of the big talking points that came out of the #MeToo movement was how long assault victims waited before reporting the incident. You make it sound so easy BKR...

No, that is your own thinking. No suggestion of ease on my part.

Kids need to be educated at appropriate age on these things, from the start.

Police and educators need to be properly trained to handle as well.

Parents need to take care to pay attention to their kids.

Child pornographers should get min life sentences, up to death penalty.

                Pedophiles get same.

                That is just a start.

I have discussed with my boys situations to avoid, regarding young women.

                So far so good...

Waited until after their movie career had started to slow or they had collected their Oscar or until it became fashionable.

I view what happened in the world of celebrity and what goes on in everyday work places differently and find it a little cynical one pretending to be the same as the other .

I suspect there are two types of casting couches in Hollywood.

                      One is exploitative.

The other is transactional, like any other exchange of goods as a bribe, or sales gift to gain advantage over competitors, or entry - and is fully consensual. In fact, it may be exploitative in the other direction.

#metoo got turned into a Hollywood psyop to distract from a problem that is worse within Hollywood than almost anywhere else. All the people that went down there were c-listers. Weinstein was by far the most vulnerable of the moguls and I highly doubt he was the most depraved.
