Yeah, like if Ted Nugent converted to Islam and formed a band with Cat Stevens.

All you would have to do is tell Nugent that Islam would let him have a child bride and he would convert in record time.

        Annnnd there goes Boris

Its a bit of a strange precedent to set given the general acceptance that all politicians lie.

Yep - bit of an interesting one:

          https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48445430

I find it interesting is that the maximum sentence is life imprisonment...

Can't see it going anywhere but the thought of seeing some of our scumbag politicians put in prison for lying is quite appealing...

It would be nice if politicians were essentially under oath while speaking publicly.Deliberate and blatant lies shouldn't be tolerated.

All that would do is eventually remove all punishments for lying under oath.

When a politician breaks a law, it's almost never actually illegal no matter what the law book says.

It is my opinion that we are about the enter the middle stages of an Empire complete with a legally privileged aristocracy that cannot be prosecuted except by a higher ranked member of the aristocracy.

Even if the next POTUS comes aboard guns blazing and congress sweeps in a wave of reformers I think the Golden Age of America is on its death bed. There isn't a magical pill to put Humpty Dumpty back together again when all the pieces have tumors.

Of course, it's not all gloom and doom. Plenty of second class citizens can lead long, healthy, happy and wealthy lives in the shadow of an all powerful corrupt aristocracy.

I believe it is inevitable within the next generation but for the sake of argument I will say: if it becomes a contest between fascist America and the America I grew up believing in at the ballot box, then I believe the fascists will win eventually and set about destroying the framework that allows freedom to prosper.

It's not an overnight affair until it is. Some tactics are doomed to fail utterly but there is a much more insidious erosion through attrition that goes on during feeble assaults such as those presented by men like Trump and his gang of idiocrats.

Opportunists looking to get some little piece of their agenda pushed through that they think is so important, make one bad exchange of freedom of the American citizen for temporary advantage in the legislature or executive branch after another. To get power in the Judicial they forego their intended role of checks and balances. To push through one more tax benefit to their sacred cow they strip a little more economic power from Farmer Joe.

To look tough on crime or curry favor with some telecom lobbyist they take pieces of your privacy and publicize more and more of your identity to where websites you've never heard of have your credit score, your middle name, your birthdate, how much you spent on your house, what kind of porn you watch and where your kids go to school.

Healthcare costs you and me an arm and a leg while the aristocrats in D.C. give themselves permanent health insurance for the rest of their lives even if they served just on term in office.

They get a permanent pension too while pensions for you and me disappear across the country faster than bic lighters go off at the end of a concert that you paid $300 to see from bad seats. Btw, in the 90s the same tickets cost about $20. I'd sort of be OK with that but it turns out that most bands see only a tiny fraction of those door receipts. We've come full circle from rock bands being indentured servants to wildly wealthy to pauper kings.

All the money in the industries get channeled to some large financial clearing house and individual people trying to achieve the American dream can't even pull it off with platinum record sales and middle class expenditures.

Those show tickets are a luxury I can afford but those "little luxuries" cost a little bit more and a little bit more all the fucking time and people don't make much more than they did 20 years ago for the same job.

To have the same small budget night that I used to have, that regular people have I gotta go so see a garage band put on by a web developer, a mechanic and a barista. I keep remembering watching Zack Wylde playing to less than a dozen people at a music festival once and feeling bad for the guy. Now everything feels like that.

Every advantage of being an American that we thought we had is being replaced with another liability and another loss of our once inherent American freedom. I have advantages that most people won't be able to achieve and I was very lucky to get them.

I can also lose all of them at any time because everything is leveraged by obscene levels of risk. That's what it takes now to make it.

I don't know what this rambling screed means. I'm just sick of this shit. I'm sick of watching people trade downward again and again like that character on Quantum Leap. No, the next leap won't take you home. It's just going to take us to an even more disadvantaged position.

Hold the highest standard to be the most vital or watch all of your standards erode to nothing.

Expect people in government to disappoint you but kick the living shit out of them when they do.

It seems like blatant lies to me. His defense seems to be going on record saying ," I am a moron that doesn't understand how money and trade works."

Think about it this way: If that's what America will accept, then that's the new standard of expectation.

Which is to say, there is no standard. Our politics are approaching the equivalent of raw dogging skeletal veteran junkie hookers in a gutter paved with dirty needles.

I wouldn't say "blatant lies " I would say intentionally misleading and or purposefully misrepresenting figures.

Trump tells "blatant lies" were as Boris is more a sophisticated political form of bullshitter.

The irony of this is that support for Brexit is lower than in 2016, mostly because those who didn't vote would vote now to Remain by a factor of 2:1.

Not only do a majority want to Remain now, a majority of Scots want independence. Add the Ireland issue in and Brexit could end up being an even worse thing for the UK than the EU ever was.

I celebrated Brexit by having dinner with the family in a nice French restaurant. Next weekend we are off to Brugge. We are going to try and claim asylum.
