    Migrant Caravan October 2018

I wanted to get this out of the TSPT so we might be able to seriously discuss the situation.

All joking aside regarding canals, A-10s, tactical nukes, cluster munitions, etc.

    Background and current situation.

I posted earlier that I was suspicious of the timing of the whole thing, and wondered who had organized it with such interesting timing (US Mid-term elections).

    Well, lo and behold...

So Mexico apparently did stop some of them.

I don't think that threatening El Salvador, Guatemala, et al., with loss of foreign aid is the best solution to this issue.

Pueblo sin Fronteras supports and helps but denies having organized this one.

Yeah, I think I found the other "suspect" shortly after that. I'm curious as to his ties to any US "immigrant rights" types of organizations. If any...

I feel like if the US government doesn't make a show of force, the armed antimigrant militia groups will, and they're more likely to start shooting.

Any fuck up on that scale would have some pretty severe political consequences though. But honestly I don't know if those political consequences would swing right or left.

5,000 to 7,000 people is a lot to try to stop. I seriously doubt if they did start shooting, they would get away with it.

The caravan is still a long way from the border, HUIXTLA, Mexico to be exact. 40-plus 12 hour days of walking.

I'm wondering what their plan is to get into the US. That's too many people to hide trying to cross illegally, and would totally overwhelm any particular border crossing. Even if the US was willing to let them in, normal processing takes a while.

There is plenty of time to put a plan in place, it's a long walk from Huixtla, Chiapas, Mexico, to the US border.

Apparently they did help organize the one before, though. Their leader got arrested in Mexico as well.

Shit, that's a long walk. So, does anyone know what they are eating? I would imagine them needing new clothes and shoes after living like that.

From what I've read, nobody has mentioned any organized support. AP reports that Mexican citizens are at times giving them rides, food, water. I mean, there are women pushing baby strollers...we all know how much attention babies need...formula, diapers, butt-wipes, etc.

I haven't seen any real investigative reporting, yet. Embedded reporters are kind of rah-rah-ing the whole thing along.

Mexico has asked the UN for assistance...

Up to 14k, now, according to some reports.

Odd that we haven't heard of anyone dying along the way. Oh, wait, here's one: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/migrant...-man-who-died/

I saw a video today but i dont think its credidble as i havent verified the claims but it had a few worded quotes from pence saying the caravan is funded by venezuela. But that sounds retarded because venezuela is undergoing civil unrest and the country is more or less bankrupt.

There's a couple things to understand, there. Venezuela may not have the money, but certain Venezuelans do. Venezuela has more oil than pretty much every other geographic region on earth. They started OPEC, for cricket's sake.

Without devolving into a discussion about Venezuelan politics, let me just say that I don't really understand *why* they would fund the caravan, so it seems implausible to me, at this time. But, they certainly *could* fund the caravan.

I understand why. Venezuela has recently been engaging in some insane saber-rattling, making claims that their army is ready to fight the U.S. This could be a relatively cheap move to destabilize the U.S and create unrest. And also possibly some sort of weird vengeace for Chavez, who claimed he got cancer as a result of being poisoned by the CIA.
