Tooling around looking at the pictures on that link, I found people saying they suspended requirements because they needed warm bodies for Iraq and Afghanistan. They made them get fit, if they didn't they were shipped out in support roles until they succeeded. Let me add, these were for people already lifted. They were reservists or people about to get out like my friend.

So it turns out that Pvt. Pyle was not a unique and special snowflake after all. What a shock.

I didn't know this until recently, but apparently there's no more sleeve rolling to coincide with bogus tattoo restrictions, so hearing this isn't too surprising. Hard to hear this when I once had a PLTN SGT that wanted to put anyone on remedial PT who got below a 280 on a PFT (and 300 is perfect!) If anyone did fail one they were taken to the "tree-line" for a "period of instruction."

I still that's nothing compared to some of the British TA guys here. I have loads of respect for the UK Forces, but I know of E-4s that have barely deployed and can't pass their PTIs. A fricken TA pti is 2 minutes to do 40 bloody sit ups and press ups, and 14 minutes to run a mile and a half. I'm sorry but any fat bastard that can't do that isn't a soldier.

Do you mean PFT or MAATS, PTI is a fitness instructor.

Sorry PFT. I know there's differences in unit, as The Royal Irish Infantry TA units here are held to higher standards, but those engineer CPLs I'm referring to need kicked out of their jobs, but apparently they're trying to downsize the Regulars and expand the TA units from what I hear.

The TA has the same entry standards as the Regulars and it's a 1.5 mile run in under 10 minutes, it then adds 30 seconds over the age of 30 year by year. Still I agree, I've seen some alarming body shapes in the TA and Regulars alike, the baseline does seem a little low. I guess it's to keep more sedentary positions in a job whilst the sharper end has a higher standard for PT.

The regular Army is indeed being downsized and the TA increased to meet the gap and apparently the quality of the TA is supposed to rise with more hybrid units, more active jobs etc. That's the idea anyway.
