Ariel Castro, Cleveland kidnapper/rapist, commits suicide in his cell

Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals. Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation.

Then what was the point of him negotiating his plea deal in order to avoid the death penalty? Justice has been denied and even worse, his family will probably file a wrongful death suit.

My guess is that he got in that cell, all by himself, after thinking it would be no big deal, and then realized how fucked up it was to the girls he did it too. Couldn't deal with it, and off'd himself.

And I'm sure the Officers were very nice to him. I know I would have been. I'm sure the call to medical was quick, too.

My first job in human services was at a residential treatment facility whose population was solely adolescent sex offenders. One big part of in the normal day to day running of the unit was that after every block of activity(meals, dorm meetings, recreation time etc) there would be a quiet half hour of contemplation about the people that they had victimized.

Apparently he thought he could live with himself and what he had done. Or maybe he had already decided he was going to die and unfortunately got the opportunity to do it on his own terms. In any case hopefully this provides better closure to the victims.
