    Update on My Work Situation.

For those of you that don't know, and yet somehow still care, I recently got in trouble at work for violating my companies internet use policy. Not content problems, just using the internet outside of breaks and lunches, mostly to go to this site. At first it looked like I was going to get a slap on the wrist, but some reason things quickly turned serious. My "verbal warning" turned into "possible termination" overnight. The entire details can be found in this thread:

    http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...threadid=10883

Well, today they made their decision. I was fired from my job 5 minutes before the end of my shift. Since I was a probationary employee, no offical reason was given, nor was one required. I didn't even get two weeks pay or any other serverance, just my accurred vacation and the pay for the days I've already worked.

The decision seemed to hit my supervisor pretty hard, he was visibily shaking as he escorted me out of the building. I'm almost positive he was fighting for me until the very end but got overruled by people higher up the ladder.

I'm still basically in shock, I have no idea what I'm going to do now. Once I sort things out in my head, I'll post more.

what's the state or federal law in this case ... just because they say it's a year probation ... doesn't mean that it legally is ...

If it's any consolation I learned from your experience and have been spending much less time on non-work related sights. You and I both work for the state right? Budget cuts are a bitch man, I'm sorry I don't know what to say.

Feel for you man. But having an engineering degree is no joke, you'll bounce back fast I'm sure of it.

              Thats fucking bullshit.
Unless your work was suffering and you were missing deadlines, they have no reason to terminate for that.

                FingerorMoon,
Over here in Cali we are dealing with budget cuts in our economy. A lot of us working for the state are getting shafted. So it's not entirely out of the blue exactly. DOn't get me wrong, I'm not in support of Punisher getting fired. In fact, I'm in the line of fire myself, esepcially since I am just an expendable student. I think it was Azteca who said that here in the states we have the most capable work force but at the same time the most expendable.

Man, that sucks. Quite the cautionary tale though.

Good luck in the search for new employment.

Mrs. Mantis says there is no federal law governing the length of time an employee can be kept on probation, so new-employee probation periods often range in length from 90 days to six months. A year is unusual, but not illegal. In most states, where we're "employees at will," an employer can fire a worker for any reason that isn't already illegal; in other words, you can't be fired due to discrimination, but you can be fired because your employer doesn't like the fact you just dyed your hair green. As a general rule, if you violate a company policy, you're just plain screwed, and the best things you can do are 1) apply for unemployment benefits, and 2) learn from the situation. Update your resume, ALWAYS be honest on a job application, and understand that you are not alone - so many people are losing their jobs these days that the stigma of being fired is a lot less than in the past. Best wishes and good luck.

Mr. Mantis says: Don't forget to make that supervisor that likes you your contact person on your resume and future job applications. Offer to take him out for a beer or lunch, bond with him a bit, and he is likely to give you a glowing recommendation to your future employer.

                    Carry on.

Thanks again for all the support.

I'm convinced the real reason behind me losing my job is budget cuts. There simply wasn't enough work to go around, one of the reasons I was on the internet. I always did all the work I was assigned, 20 permits in the first three months, only 3 in the second three months. Like I said in the other thread, all violating the policy just gave them a reason to feel better about letting me go. I guess I'll know in a couple of days if a job opening for my former position appears on their website.

I don't really have any hard feelings towards them, it was still the best job I ever had.

It sucks to be me, but really it's not so bad (can you tell I'm entering the denial phase). I was saving up to buy a car, so I have quite a lot of money saved up, about $15k. My girlfriend has a great job and makes enough for both of us to live on.

I'm pretty sure several of my former coworkers will give me a good reference, but I'm not too sure about my former supervisor. He likes me and I like him, but I'm pretty sure he could get into trouble if anyone found out he gave out more that position and length of employment. I hope we can continue at least a semblence of a personal relationship, although even that may be difficult.

Punisher, that sucks ass. And I agree with you that the main reason for your termination was the budget. They were probably looking for any good reason to let you go, but c'mon, you should have known better.

What company was it, so I can avoid working for them in the future.

                          Sorry, that sucks.
And that's when I figured out that tears couldn't make somebody who was dead alive again. There's another thing to learn about tears, they can't make somebody who doesn't love you any more love you again. It's the same with prayers. I wonder how much of their lives people waste crying and praying to God. If you ask me, the devil makes more sense than God does. I can at least see why people would want him around. It's good to have somebody to blame for the bad stuff they do. Maybe God's there because people get scared of all the bad stuff they do. They figure that God and the Devil are always playing this game of tug-of-war game with them. And they never know which side they're gonna wind up on. I guess that tug-of-war idea explains how sometimes, even when people try to do something good, it still turns out bad.

Can I add something new to this?

It really sucks that they did that.
