Feral Hogs: Because they are insanely tasty.

Greetings denizens of bullshido. I am looking for a place to hunt some feral hog in Indiana or the states surrounding, but if you've got some a little further than I might be willing to drive for it.

The hogs are considered an invasive species in most areas of the US and are also normally classified as a nuisance animal due to the damage they do to property and crops.

Why do this? Because they are delicious. Insanely delicious. If you think about some of the best pork products you've ever had and then multiply the delicious by about four then that is what feral hog tastes like.

So what I'd like to do is come to the aid of anyone who's having a problem with these animals on their property. Even though I'd like to be able to return again and again, I understand that this isn't what people with feral hogs want. They want them gone. So I'd kill as many as I could, spread their blood on the places they seem to enjoy, share the meat with the property owner and carry what I can back to Indiana with me.

I'd do all this for free... even gut and clean the share I leave behind but the property owner would have to handle processing the meat themselves. I will help transport the piggies to the butcher if needed, though.

So if anyone you know has been bitching about feral hogs, let me know. I'll be happy to help.

Are there significant numbers of feral hogs in Indiana? I'm not from here originally, but web searches when I was looking into hog hunting in the area didn't come back with much.

Not yet, but give it a few years. There's some in the north via Michigan and some in the south as well but none actually near me around Tippecanoe county. Which is both fortunate and unfortunate. Good for just about anyone with land or fishermen, bad for me because I want to eat them.

They are indeed very tasty. When my wife and I went to Italy a few years ago we found a region where they're cultivated for their meat. The locals have a contained area where they can run wild.

I can't remember the name of the (sub)region, but I believe we were in Tuscany at the time. I had feral hog at almost every meal while we were there. It was delicious.

Danno hunts them with just a knife in Australia.
Shut the hell up and train.

Not in Indiana but they are a pest here as well.
They get huge too, i've seen them in the 400 lbs range.
            Mighty tasty they are.

these things are more than a pest, they're a menace. the more people who wanna go out and pop those things, the better (although they're numbers are so high right now, i don't think hunters can keep up with them).

for anyone who's wondering just how dangerous hunting these things can be, here's about how big they can get to:

good luck on your quest, kill bunches, man!

It's a performance center Smith and Wesson .500. The .460s weren't out when those pictures were taken IIRC.

edit: also, i guess there are some discrepancies with the story, saying that the pig wasn't as big as they said, it was a farm raised pig, etc.

i apologize for any confusion, as i was also misled. :(

When I first saw the title, I thought it said: "Feral dogs: Because they are extremely tasty"

Joking aside, I have a question: would a 7.92x57mm IS (8mm Mauser) be suitable for hunting feral hogs? I would like to do a hunting myself as soon I can get a gun and hunter's permit.

In my area, wild hogs and feral ones are most common game where I live. I know that the 9.3x47mmR is good for feral hogs, but how does it work on wild ones, and how does the 7.92 Mauser work on both?

                            Javelina aren't pigs, though.

Depending on where you are it may not even require a hunting permit.

This is a reasonable list of what cartridges are good for the hogs, but remember that shot placement is key on these animals since the skin around their shoulders can be THICK.

Edit: I would not put feral dog out of the realm of possibility.
