    Fun with Google Books Ngram

    What is Google Books Ngram?

    http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/

It shows the relative number of occurences of a word in all of the books that Google has scanned and/or made publicly available.

    Why is it interesting?

You can see the popularity of a word grow or diminish over the years.

As an example, here is a search for 'judo':

Judo is apparently getting more widely available and probably cheaper. DO JUDO.

Here is 'Tae Kwon Do' (which we know was really created around the 1950's):

Now for a fun one: 'Ninjitsu' (capitalization matters):

Looks like Ninjitsu has had 2 big spikes. I find the huge one in the 70's hilariously expected.

    A final one for 'Ninja':

Ninjitsu and Ninjas: Not so ancient.

    Google does cool shit.

    Awesome!

As a student, I use google books a lot to access historical texts. This is going to be a great tool to use.
