    Pork! Why not?

After a recent discussion with a friend i'm truly curious why some ethnic/religious and social(?) groups don't eat pork.

If you don't eat pork, why not?

I can see why someone wouldn't eat it because they don't care for the taste. I could even see why someone wouldn't do it out of a tradition, ex. i didn't eat it growing up so I won't as an adult.

Is there any real factual reason why pork is bad? I've heard an argument that pork is unclean, of course this same argument for pork being "unclean" has not been from those that don't eat pork. I've also heard that back in the day pig farms were really unsanitary and that's where the current bias against pork eating stems from. Of course, the few people i've known who don't eat it just said they don't eat pork and I respect that and I don't want to question them or feel like i'm calling them out.

Can anyone give me further input on why some don't eat pork?

    Compared to what? Bad how?

Have you ever had it? It tastes delicious.

Last weekend I smoked a pork shoulder for about 14 hours. Good stuff.

Also, a pig is one of the few animals that will eat it's own crap.

My dog is also one of the exceptions.

Admittedly, I do eat pork and dog.

I wonder if this is what makes it a carrier for that parasite? At any rate the whole killing you in a painful way like bad shell fish is a perfectly reasonable reason to not eat something.

Reasons are across the board, from religious reasons to ignorance.

The "filthy pig farm" thing is a myth: all animal farms are filthy, but some are more filthy than others...

Kosher (not all) Jews and most Muslims (not all) including Muslim-oriented organizations like the Nation of Islam avoid pork because of these sections in the Torah and Quran:
Deuteronomy 14:814:8 And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.

" Forbidden to you for (food) are: dead meat
blood and the flesh of the swine and that
which hath been invoked the name other than
            Allah. "
            Holy Qur'an 5:4

Fish and shellfish for sale in tanks in groceries and restaurants also eat their own crap (or "bioload" as it were).

Reminds me of the Catholic Priest and Rabbi sitting on a plane together. The Catholic Priest asks for a ham and cheese sandwich and as it arrives says to the Rabbi, "have you ever had a ham sandwich?"
The Rabbi replies, "as a matter of fact, I have, once."
The Priest says, "what did you think?"
The Rabbi says, "it was actually pretty good."
The Priest begins scarfing his sandwich making known he loves the taste, letting out loud "mmmmmmm's" and smacking his lips, eventually declaring, "delicious", upon completion, really trying to stick it to the Rabbi.
The Rabbi picks up a magazine and turns to an article about sexual relations amongst religious types. He turns to the Priest who is reading over his shoulder and says, "have you ever had sex?"
The Priest replies, "as a matter of fact, I have, once."
The Rabbi slowly turns back to the article and says, "beats the hell out of a ham sandwich, don't it?"
GET A RED BELT OR DIE TRYIN'.

The Torah and later Quran(based largely off of the Torah) have all sorts of good health habits in it such as bathing in it.

A , would have been helpful referring in it back to the books.

Eating of bottom dwellers is also a prohibition.

However the laws came about, there were, at that time as we now know, solid reasons.

Washing in the ashes of the red calf? Who cares if it was purple with pink polkadots? The ashes themselves had astringent properties. The blood taboo is another.

Anyone here ever eaten snake? Good lean meat it is.

I think eating insects is out for kosher Jews too.

It is my understanding that's why artichoke from a tin is kosher, and fresh artichoke isn't. Or the heart is, leaves aren't. Or something. My limited pretense at knowledge just ran out as I was typing.

I'd love to hear if that's true from a Kosher Jew though, if we have one here?

Usually this is true, but there is one type of locust that is okay. Generally it is thought that the exact type was lost, but the Ethiopian Jewish tradition maintains that they continue the tradition.

i won't eat type of food that i haven't, at one point in my life, killed and prepared myself.

it's a gut instinct thing. i've been fishing, cleaned and prepped fish, so fish is ok in my book. i'm not willing to personally kill a pig, cow or bird. more power to you if you are, that's cool, we all make our choices.

shellfish are just gross, though. that's why i don't eat them.
