Taekwondo Adopted As Official Subject in LA School District

Students attending public schools in Los Angeles can now take Korea's traditional martial arts, taekwondo in school.

The Korea Cultural Center in Los Angeles said eight public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District have decided to adopt the Korean martial art as part of their curriculum for physical education and additionally as an after school extra-curricular activity starting from September.

Up until now, only two middle schools in Los Angeles have taught taekwondo at school as part of the non-regular curriculum.

The culture center also plans to encourage more schools nearby to adopt the martial art.

The article doesn't state under which TKD organization the classes will be. Any word on that?

I think its going to be American Taekwondo Association styled taekwondo since that club pretty much dominates America (from what I've heard...lets hope its not though *shivers*:sad8:

LA Unified doesn't have money to support band or art classes, but can drop dough on the *very* suburban sport of TKD? Can someone explain this please?

I'm guessing they think MA would be popular, but they're scared of something as *gasp* hard-hitting as Muay Thai.

It's all part of an attempt to raise the next Steven Lopez.

More serious I am genuinely curious as to how this will work out. It said it was done as part of their Phys. Ed program. So, is the Taekwondo curriculum going to focus solely on physical fitness and not on other aspects like sparring?
