Teen dies of heart failure after day of judo, beating

KOBE (Kyodo) A 13-year-old boy died Wednesday of complications apparently brought on by heatstroke from training at a judo camp in Awaji, Hyogo Prefecture, and not from a beating by an instructor, police said.

Police had initially suspected the beating from Yuki Nagahara's instructor had caused his death, but an autopsy, showing he died of a heart attack, determined there was no direct link between the beating and his death.

Police suspect Nagahara suffered heatstroke after training all day in intense summer heat and are questioning people in charge of the camp to see how hard they pushed the students.

The 29-year-old judo instructor told police he slapped Nagahara in the face and kicked him in the abdomen "for discipline" after supper Tuesday at the hotel where the judo trainees were staying.

Nagahara collapsed in a hotel bathroom in the presence of a 25-year-old instructor at around 10:35 p.m. and was rushed to a hospital, where he died three hours later.

Eishi Miki, vice principal at Nagahara's junior high school, expressed his sorrow over the death at a news conference Wednesday morning.

About 90 students from three Kobe junior high schools were taking part in the three-day training course, which began Monday.

Nagahara appeared tired during Tuesday's training, which was from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the sources said.

He did not appear to have an appetite during dinner. After the meal, he was singled out by the instructor and ordered to sit with his legs folded under him in the hotel lobby, where he was berated for showing "bad behavior" during training and then beaten, police said, noting the other instructor was present but did not participate.

Nagahara and the instructor who witnessed the incident then went to take showers. The boy then complained of feeling ill and collapsed.

Nagahara, who won in the individual category for sumo at a municipal sporting event last month, was 171 cm tall and weighed 122 kg.

I was just about to ask how common is this type of beating and humiliation in Japan. How often do people die from crap like this?

I hope this instructor is facing some jail time.

Hazing is very common even in the "peaceful" aikido clubs. See this Aikido Journal thread (http://www.aikidojournal.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4464&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=&sid=2092793016c1e064cc4c115c369a7ee2) for instance.

Also in Sumo:

If this happens in front of the camera, go figure what happens when there's no camera.

Often enough.

Probably not going to happen.

I'm confused. I thought the article said he died from heat exhaustion. I'm not trying to justify what the instructor did. It sounds like child abuse to me but I'm not Japanese. How many American kids die from heat exhaustion and/or heart failure at football camp? The answer is, "enough." And we don't put football coaches in jail.

or in the military. my brother joined the marines, and in the next group of recruits one of his former drill instructors got, one died from heat exhaustion. the physical abuse is a no-bs approach to motivating people, but (i believe) that kind of "motivation" may deal a lot of damage psychologically, which may inadvertently lower their physical tolerance.

Eh, Japanese society is basically all about hazing and humiliation. That is why it gives us hentai tentacle porn.

I grew up like this. All the men in my family grew up in this kind of environment. (not in Japan, though.) Its very common in countries where athletes go through a spartan regiment of training.

I think its got a time and place. And has to do a lot with culture. Would not fly in the U.S., where when that happens its usually from a guy on a power trip, ego issue, etc. and not from imposing discipline.

Just to add:
my middle school ran a Judo program. The guys there lived on campus and trained every day. Very spartan. (I wasn't part of it) Produced olympic class students.

I asked how they were doing and apparently some kid died doing a choke. Its all rumors so I don't know the exact circumstances of the death, but a kid did die and that was the end of the Judo program.

I remember how the instructor used to beat the **** out of us (he tought P.E. for my class). Like, to inflict injury and not just pain. Nutcase. I hope he got the appropriate sentencing.

That degree of violence would have been only somewhat effective in controlling the 50 stupid rebellious korean boys that made up our middle school class. . but his punishments brings up memories =]
