seems like an intriguing style:

"In Taoist belief, life is a balance between the five elements. The fire element gives heat, strength and expansive energy. The water element is cooling and cleansing. Too much heat and a person will live vigorously but die young. The fire element is necessary for life but the water element is the key to longevity.

The creation of Water Boxing or Six Harmony and Eight Method Boxing (Liu Ho Ba Fa) is generally credited to a Taoist monk, Chen His-I, who lived on Hwa Shan (Mount Hwa) in Shansi province during the tenth century. Chen Hsi-I was a hermit who was seeking the secret of immortality. He practiced longevity techniques, breath work and meditation. In the course of his work, he developed the main form of Water Boxing, a martial arts style based on the Taoist understanding of the nature of water. He never taught the style but he kept written records of his work.

After his death, another Taoist hermit , Lee Dong Feng, chanced upon Chen Hsi-I's cave. He found the skeleton of Chen Hsi-I and his manuscripts. Lee Dong Feng realized the importance of his discovery and recreated Water Boxing from the writings.

The original manuscripts have been lost but Lee Dong Feng wrote a poem "The Five Character Secret", which is now the classic reference for Water Boxing practitioners. Lee Dong Feng began to teach the style, initially to other Taoist monks. It has been passed on since his time.

Water Boxing is often referred to as the fourth internal style and is grouped with Tai Chi, Hsing-I and BA-Qua It has been called the last of the closed door styles. It has recently begun to receive greater public attention as more internal stylists become interested in its unique flavor and beauty."

Every time I read about Water Boxing, anywhere, I often have a rough time turning up actual talking of "fighting."

I do hear a lot about flowing and beautiful forms though...

Which is a bit troubling.

I fought a water boxing guy for my first fight. I lost the decision, which I thought was bullshit, but i didn't get that mad because I did terrible.

The dudes from the school seemed pretty wack, their strategy was pretty much run up on the dude and try to push him into the ropes and work the body.

I actually have a really old video lying around somewhere of water boxing. It's not this thread's water boxing. It's a boxing match under water.

I have trained in this method since 1991. I wrote an article about the art, years ago, that I am willing to post if anyone is interested.

This is not a thread contribution.

If you wanted to contribute to the thread, post the actual article.
