The other day, I was sharing my belief that archery contests would be way more fun if instead of both shooting at targets, the two archers ran around in a field and shot at each other.
In response, one of my friends (who happens to to be really into LARPing) told me that he had two bows and half a dozen foam tipped arrows.
I just got back from the park, where we spent the afternoon archery dueling.
Despite the fact that I've held a bow about half a dozen times in my life before, and consequently, my archery is more than a bit lacking, it was awesomely fun. It was totally LARPtastic, but I don't care.
The only way I can see that this could be better is if it were a mounted archery duel. Sadly, I neither own a horse nor know how to ride a horse. Yet.

Were you using a normal archery bow (no idea what they're called)

A compound bow

Or something more conducive to larping, like a longbow

I used to do archery. The boring nonchanging element was why i eventually left.

One of the first and one of the third. Maybe you should grab another archer and try some dueling.

there is nothing wrong with larping as long as you know that it is larping:)

Cheers!

I dunno about "real" bow and foam-tipped arrows, but all the cool kids had these bad daddies (http://nerfcenter.com/reviews-of/BownArrow.htm) back in the day.

Alex, you make me glad that we're friends, and not enemies.

(lest i get a foam tipped arrow to the eye)

Back about twenty years,
my local archery club got the city
to donate some left over military
bunkers, and a few acres.

They built basically a golf course
layout (a full 18 'holes') for archery.

Some paper targets, aome 3D targets
(deer, boar, monkey, bigfoot?), and
just enough variation in distance, and
clear sightlines to keep it interesting.

I definitely think the foamtipped arrows
(paintball-tipped???) thing might be a
great thing to introduce there, thanks!!

Riding a mount and firing a bow is probably one of the hardest things, physically and mentally I've ever had to do in my entire life. It's in my blood to do it, and I had to try it once, but honestly the only thing I can make analogous to it is trying to drive with your feet at Laguna Seca in a 1984 Ford Mustang on hankook radials while a band of hyenas riding motorcycles are chasing you with clubs.

LARPing is awesome fun, so long as no one sees you :p When I was in middle school I made a bow out of a stick and some string, nothing fancy, but it shot fairly well up to twenty metres. I used to ride around on my bike and shoot arrows at street signs (I could steer without using my hands, bitches). Once I shot a sign made of rotting wood and the whole thing splintered, and I got caught, so that was the end of my childhood mounted-archery LARP.

For some reason, I read this as a poem. It took me a while to work out it wasn't in verse. :(

Nice take on archery!

I don't see how this is live action roleplaying though? I mean were you prancing about while doing so pretending to be mystical magical elves? It just seems like you were having fun hurting each other, safely.

My favorite of this type of activity: when I was still in high school I built a bunch of suits of armor by cutting up neighbor's trash cans. Usually I found them on the road after a big storm. Anyways, I used steel wire to hook em together, pvc pipe for the arms and strong buckets with cutouts and straps (to hold em on) for vision purposes. Then I would put them on and stuff em with foam stuffing and go at it with 2 inch thick dowel rods with my friends.

See, I used to make up sports as a kid, all kinds, and I really wanted to have a "melee" like in the old medieval tournaments but made out of simple stuff for the neighborhood kids. I was forced to stop though (beings I was the only person who actually "practiced" this stuff) because I kept injuring the other kids :-/

I wasn't a bully by any means as a kid and got laughed at plenty... but I loved doing this type of stuff.

My personal favorite was taking really big bamboo rods and taking one of those huge rubber balls (like 3 feet tall) from the Toys R'Us and playing a mix between soccer and lacrosse.

Although, it really sucks when people stop wanting to hang out with you because they always end up getting hurt :-/ In the soccer/lacrosse/bamboo game I ended up highsticking a kid in the face and cutting his eye (gave him a nice scar). In the melee I ended up fracturing a kids hand and cutting it open (2 inch thick dowels hurt like a bitch).

Good memories though. I wonder if my parents still have any of that stuff left in storage?

haha my friend from down the street and i had a TON of cardboard. i dont mean just a few extra boxes, i mean two dozen, 3'x4'x3' boxes.

we were big fans of the reniassance festival, so we put this cardboard to good use. we spent a few hours in separate rooms making cardboard armor and weapons. when we were done, we met eachother outside, dressed in our armor with our sheilds and weapons. we were prepaired for battle.

the swords and axes we made ended up just shredding to bits, so we each used a thick cardboard tube (the kind used for shipping posters). that thing sting like a bitch when itd hit open skin. after a while, it started to shred and turned into a whip of sorts.

with no usable weapons left, broken armor, and bruises all over, we stopped for the day. it was a nice saturday time-waster

man, we would do some really stupid stuff haha. fun times.

One of my friends used to make weapons out of those pool noodles and various other items. He would put one over a long stick and voila, instant spear! We used to have battles with groups of friends with those things.

Sort of breaks apart at the last verse though.

Reenactment groups (SCA, etc.) have been doing this for decades: check out
"combat archery" on YouTube.

when we were young we used to play "commandos" using our .177 slug guns loaded with mung beans (like a dried pea)... OUCH!!

One day my friends big brother thought he would get in on the act and locked me in the shed, gave me a cardboard box to defend myself with and shot me about 10 times through the louvre windows with his .22 slug gun using actual slugs. When he let me out i was bleeding profusely from the head and he was shocked. He said "but i gave you a cardboard box to defend yourself with" ha ha ha, stupid fucker...

I would be interested in Larchery, sounds like a blast. But it would have to be in a secluded forest where nobody could see me.
