Are you looking at a school that teaches it? do they have a website?

I googled and found this video... Kalaripayattu - Barehanded fighting on Yahoo! Vidéo (http://fr.video.yahoo.com/watch/49075/647115)
Looks like capoiera with knives... which is a really, really bad idea

Edit: To be honest, after checking out www.kalaripayattu.org (http://www.kalaripayattu.org) I would suggest you stay far the hell away from these guys if you want to learn anything useful.

I'm not normally one to judge quickly, but more Google-fu reveals it is heavily intertwined with Ayurveda, some other web pages allege it is the world's oldest martial art, and some say that pressure points are emphasized. Also, they have many poses, one of which is a fish pose.

*blinks*

...WTF does a fish pose look like?

Dear god... The vid... no words... it looks like the bastard child of capoiera + bad aikido + knives.

Anyways, one more vote towards finding something else if you are looking for something useful.

"Is it any good?" depends entirely on what you're looking for. Kalaripayattu is a legit. ancient style, possibly one of the oldest MAs still practiced. It's highly ritualized and requires great physical agility and skill. If that sounds useful to you, go for it. If you want something that will help you survive street fights or win MMA matches then look somewhere else.

There have been numerous Kalaripayattu threads on MAP through the ages, and the general consensus is that it's mostly flash and chop-sockey. Kind of an Indian version of Wushu.

If your ever in London check out a teacher by the name of Paul Whitrod. He is a TMA practitioner of various arts but his school includes frequent full contact sparring. I've met a Nei Jia guy who was incredibly powerful who talked highly of his fighting ability. The fact that he spars full contact and so do his students you can go and have a look for yourself if your ever interested and in London.
