So in the past week I had several things happen and I thought it would be fun sharing this with you:

The good:

We had a SAMBO exam this weekend. Out of 7 candidates only 2 showed up. That's okay, very normal for my exams which take over 3 hours for lower belts. One of my guys who moved away came back for the exam. He brought with him two older gentlemen who wanted to roll with the candidates. One of the older gentlemen studied with both the Gracies and the Machados before anybody had heard of the UFC. This Gentleman was 68 years old. He got on the mat and rolled with my guys. Did pretty well for himself. The man had the arms of a 25 year old and probably 8% body fat. I think I have a new hero. I told him he'll still be behind Gene Lebell but definitely my hero. He didn't take great insult. Apparently he's trained with Gene too.

The Bad:
This how a challenge match should happen.

One of our guys had an argument with his neighbor. Our motto is that if you really are that angry bring it into the gym and they can settle the issue there. Most of the time you'll find out the other person was full of it and backs out after posturing a bit. Not this time. Last night we had this gentleman come in and was determined to show our guy up. This gentleman was taller about 20lbs bigger and former military (Don't ask I don't know). I told the guy he earned much respect from me. Coming into a gym with little training shows a lot of heart.

Long story short- guy gave up in less than 2 minutes because of exhaustion.

The ugly:
Guy inquiring about Kung fu classes.

"I would like to take kung fu lessons I don't like Jiu jitsu"

"Why don't you like jiu jitsu?"

"I don't like being choked"

"We do choking in kung fu"

"Oh....."

"I mean it's not what we mainly do but we have to be semi realistic"

"Well I guess that's realistic because most fights go to the ground"

"Most fights end up on the ground, very few actually deliberately go to the ground."

"Um..."

"I'm messing with you that's a debate for another time"

"K.."

"Do you pressure your students?"

"Well yeah but each according to their own pace. I award you a blackbelt without pressure testing your skills"

"Well I don't care about rank"

"Fine"

"I mean I did Capoeira before"

"Capoeira has ranking"

"No it doesn't"

"Yes they do"

"My school didn't"

"Possible"

"Yes we just worked out and eventually you earned a scarf"

"That's rank"

"No it isn't"

"Then what would you call it"

"An award for knowing certain things"

"Um....Yeah, you may want to try the school down the street"

"What do you think of them"

"A little watered down for my taste....should be fine for you".

so did the neighbor spar with your student or did he participate in the class and then give up?

Ladies and gentlemen, this thread is why its awesome to be in SB, and why I want so badly to get back.

Omega, who were the few and the proud who showed up to the exam, and did they pass?

Oh no, he sparred. Lasted about 1 minute and 15 seconds before he gave up due to exhaustion.

Steve and Michelle showed up. They did well. We have video.

Is it alright if you show the video? or is it private?

What does the 3 hour of testing entail if I may ask?

And when you wrote "i award you a blackbelt without pressure testing your skills" was that a typing error, or were you being sarcastic, or what?

I loved "the ugly" story though.

Wow.

You know, I was going to skip training tonight, because I have an exam tomorrow and thought I might dedicate the whole night to cramming.

But this thread has convinced me to say screw it and go train.

Plenty of time to study afterwards, while basking in the wonderful aches of an intensive week's training.

I take it the guy didn't realise you were taking the piss out of him did he? (sorry that's an Australian term if you don't get it).

Funny story man :)

"So your boss pays you for work, right?"

"No. I get a monetary reward."

"But you do get money, right?"

"I get a paycheck. That is not pay. It is a check."

Question for you Omega: what was this man's mental state?

I had a dude enquire about classes.

Him - "Do you guys teach that cage fighting stuff?"
Me - "I teach Mixed Martial arts, but ye it's what they use in the UFC"
Him - "I don't know, one of my mates does kung fu and he recons
that the cage fighting stuff is ok for against one person but if
you want to beat 5 guys with knives you need kung fu"
Me - "Why don't you come for a free class and bring your kung fu friend with"

Never saw him, I think he learning to beat 5 guys with knives as we speak.

That stuff is easy, you just jam their knives with your ribcage.

Good for him. It takes balls to walk into someone else's gym and sort your problems out on the mat in front of everyone.

How was he afterward? Was he cool or did he claim to lose to an ear grind and demand a rematch?
