There is a new MMA fight club / indoor paintball facility here in my hometown.

http://www.geronimofightclub.com

My major question is that Gary Higdon, who appears to be the lead instructor, claims to be born out of the 1-501st Airborne US Infantry Task Force and "rated the #1 boxing coach in Alaska" with one loss. A Google for "Gary Higdon" with keywords "boxing" and/or "Alaska" reveals nothing. He states he offers:

"BOXING, MMA, FITNESS, WOMEN SELF-DEFENSE, MILITARY TACTICS, HAND TO HAND COMBAT and BODY FITNESS PROGRAMS to most ages."

The other instructors, Trent Walkins, and boxing coach Francis Sargent have verifiable fight records and Mr. Sargent has coached and reffed around here before.

Overall I think it may be a good training facility, but my only concern is verifying Mr. Higdons credentials to instruct boxing or any MA tactics.

I have stopped by the school a few times in person but they were closed, but that is not their fault as I work weird hours. Going to make it over there this week hopefully, but any insight is appreciated.

Are you sure about that first link? When I click on it I get brought to some kind of Christian site.

Okay, please don't misinterpret what you read when posting in MABS. Post the facts.

You have combined statements, from multiple pages on the website, to make this sound worse than it was originally typed.

Here is the exact quote from the website.

About Geronimo Fight Club

The Geronimo Fight Club has come from the roots of the 1-501st. Airborne Infantry Task Force (US Army) were "being the best is betting the best." We have always set the standards for the US Army and will now set the standards in the fight world. We have now joined forces with B.A.D. Boxing to give all our customers the best in everything. B.A.D. Boxing (Boxing Against Drugs) offers over thirty years of boxing, with many golden glove and silver glove winners under his belt and being the lightheavyweight champion himself, gives our customers the best in boxing. Now, nowhere is this attributed specifically to Gary. It is in general about the Club. Did you notice the the use of the word "we" instead of "I?"

This is speaking of the people as a group not a specific individual.

"rated the #1 boxing coach in Alaska" with one loss. Again, another possible misinterpretation.
Here is what the website actually stated:
http://geronimofightclub.com/boxing/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=34

Gary has been rated the #1 Boxing Coach in Alaska with a Boxing team last season loosing only one fight. Now, it could have been stated better. Thing is, I think they are talking about his team losing one fight not Gary.

Again we are talking about Alaska with an estimated population of 670,053. There are cities with more people than that. This is an entire state so, in perspective, it isn't that hard to believe.

A Google for "Gary Higdon" with keywords "boxing" and/or "Alaska" reveals nothing. Considering there are no weird claims, that isn't huge. What if it was the local paper? Again, it sounds like creative Marketing.

No he doesn't.

This is what the website states:

Services Geronimo Fight Club

We teach BOXING, MMA, FITNESS, WOMEN SELF-DEFENSE, MILITARY TACTICS, HAND TO HAND COMBAT and BODY FITNESS PROGRAMS to most ages. We also have INDOOR PAINTBALL.

Pricing:

ADULTS: $50.00/month AGES: (18 and UP)

KIDS: $25.00/month AGES: (8 to 17)

Again, you missed the word "we." When you go through the Bios you see which person has what training.

Overall I think it may be a good training facility, but my only concern is verifying Mr. Higdons credentials to instruct boxing or any MA tactics. This is all well and good. Again, there are multiple coaches and he is possibly a boxing coach. This could be a business deal where he owns/lead the group but, the others are the real coaches.

I have stopped by the school a few times in person but they were closed, but that is not their fault as I work weird hours. Going to make it over there this week hopefully, but any insight is appreciated.
Good ask these questions, then worry. Ask them for his credentials. I mean you have proven 2 out of 3 instructors are legit.

Actually what I interpret from the site is that he is claiming to be "rated the #1 boxing coach in Alaska" . Perhaps the second part is up for interpretation, but the first part is clear.

Also he is not just claiming to be a boxing coach, but he claims to be developing a new MMA style with Trent Wilkins:

"Gary and Trent are making a new MMA System that will soon take over the MMA world in the future."

That is a fine and dandy as many a MMA artist has developed his own style ("thug jitsu" comes to mind), but it clearly demonstrates he is more than just the leader of a group of coaches.

I have nothing against the man personally, but while researching the school I could not find anything on him, so I am asking for any knowledge on him.

However I also dropped him an email, and plan on going there this weekend.

9/21/2008 6:03am,
Hello,
My name is Dave Rogers and I live & teach Muay Thai in Normal, IL. I've know Francis Sargeant for years and I've even Reffed him and his cousin Junior Hosea in an Boxing Exhibition once, (Junior fought Tyson when Cus was bringing up Tyson out in NY) so I can vouch for Francis, hell of a fight considering we are just all a bunch of Old Guys.
It's quite possible that the other guys have their MMA based in the Army's MACP (Modern Army Combatives Program) because I've been involved in it as well. Just a guess.
I taught Boxing/Muay Thai down at Ft. Benning in 2003 and they are now using my cirricullum for their Level 3 course. My credentials are verifiable by just calling or e-mailing down there and talking to Sgt Matt Larsen.
I was under consideration to be hired as the civilian coach for Level 3 and Marc Denny (Dog Brothers) was going to be the Level 4 coach.
That being said, the Army is in the process of teaching enough Instructors to cover the 1.2 million people who have been ordered to undergo MACP from the Top to the Bottom, so I would imagine you will be seeing many more of these people in the civilian ranks as time goes by.
Again, I am just speculating, but this is a possibility.

Thanks Dave. Do you know by chance when they are open? I went over there Wednesday night around 8:00pm and also Sunday afternoon around 4:30pm. According to their site they are open then, but the doors were closed and lights were out. Their phone # is disconnected and my email has went unanswered.

I know Francis Sargent is a great local boxer with a good record. Mr. Walkins I do not know, but he has a verifiable fight record. The only one I questioned was Mr. Higdon, but if he received his training from MACP and is basing his new MMA system around that, and claims that, then that is all well. I also would like to verify his #1 boxing coach claim.

No I cant, I did see a little thing on TV last week or so they were doing a charity event or something and I saw Francis being interviewed on the local news. Cant tell you anything other then that.

Well I went over there last night at 7:10pm and the place was closed up and dark. The phone number is still disconnected. My second email to Mr. Higdon for info went unanswered, so I am going to assume the school is closed, or has reduced its hours just to train its current members.

Yes, we all have back grounds in the MMA world or boxing. Trent Wilkins fights here at Geronimo Fight Club taught by Gary Higdon just like all the rest of the fight teams. Francis Sargent is 30 years in boxing from am to pro. Gary Higdon was a combatives instructor for the 1-501 and boxing instructor for the Alaska US Army. He is level 3 in combatives and has been fighting for a very long time before you ever heard of UFC and yes Matt Larson has heard of him.
He is also the head coach and has trent and Sargent teach while he runs the business side of the business or now than ever. The new number at the shop is 309-966-1488 and was under electicial construction when you all came by and had to close the doors when it got dark untill they turned the power back on. Please come see us at Geronimo Fight Club and learn what we are all about. I do understand that there are many guys out there that do not have the back ground to teach and I believe everyone should ask them about thier back ground before joining a club. Plus I want to thank all that stuck up for us to ask before saying anything about us. Plus once again I am sorry we had to close at dark at that time but we had no option. You can see us on www.geronimofightclub.com

Higdon's hero
1/24/2009 12:37am,
I led Gary Higdon for a couple of years. In that time I did a lot of below level one MMA training with him, and beat him mercifully. He never fought Adults in Alaska, so I don't know where his stats are coming from. Maybe he picked on kids coming off the bus, but from what I saw, he never won or challenged one fighter. He worked in the Battalion Gym because he was broken and couldn't perform his military obligations. Do you get certified from checking people in at the door, I think not.
Don't get caught in the scam, stay sucka free as one of my boyz used to say.

Geronimo Gym is a joke
