UPDATE: Angel Valodia Matos banned for life from International Taekwondo Competition

UPDATE II: Video added

How about that "honor" in "Traditional" Martial Arts, eh?

Angel Valodia Matos from Cuba kicked the referee, Chakir Chelbat from Sweeden, in the face during a bronze medal match against Arman Chilmanov from Kazakhstan. Angel kicked and punched the official for declaring him the loser of the bronze medal match.

He must have known we already awarded d-bag of the month to China.

Don't tick off a taekwondo athlete -- Chakir Chelbat learned that the hard way Saturday. The Swedish ref was kicked in the face by Cuba's Angel Matos, one of the competitors in a bronze-medal match.

Matos was mad because he had been disqualified, so he kicked up a storm.
Naturally, the World Taekwondo Federation wasn't pleased and recommended Matos be banned for life.

"We didn't expect anything like what you have witnessed to occur," said WTF secretary general Yang Jin-suk. "I am at a loss for words."

Yang also recommended Matos' coach be banned.

Matos was winning, 3-2, with 1:02 left in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. Matos was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked Chelbat, who required stitches in his lip. Matos spat on the floor and was escorted out.
"This is an insult to the Olympic vision, an insult to the spirit of taekwondo and, in my opinion, an insult to mankind," Yang said.

Matos' coach was unapologetic.

"He was too strict," Leudis Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

To be fair I believe the judging has been quite bad in this event too.

But yeah, integrity honour blah blah...

8/23/2008 3:17pm,
So he was too hurt to fight his opponent but he can flip off a round kick into the head of the official with the very leg that was purported to be hurt. Loser.

Cuban Taekwondo Champ Faces Ban for Kicking Olympic Ref in Head

By Erik Matuszewski

Aug. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Former Olympic taekwondo champion Angel Valodia Matos may be banned from international competition for kicking a referee in the head yesterday after he was disqualified from his bronze-medal match in Beijing.

Matos, a 31-year-old Cuban, was declared the loser of his 80-kilogram (176-pound) bout because he took more than the allowed one minute of injury time. The 2000 gold medalist then went after Swedish referee Chakir Chelbat, first pushing him and then delivering a kick to Chelbat's face.

``It is an insult to Olympism, an insult to the spirit of taekwondo and an insult to mankind,'' Jin Suk Yang, the secretary general of the World Taekwondo Federation, said last night at a news conference. ``On behalf of taekwondo I express my regrets.''

The referee required stitches in his lip and the federation said it's looking into legal action against Matos. It has asked the International Olympic Committee to strip Matos of his fifth- place finish in Beijing and ban him from future competition.

Matos, who finished 11th at the Athens Games four years ago, spat on the floor after kicking Chelbat and had to be escorted from the gymnasium at Beijing Science and Technology University. Matos's opponent, Arman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan, said Matos had broken a toe on his left foot during the second round.

``To me it was obvious he was unable to continue,'' Chilmanov told reporters. ``My opponent did not behave in a sportsman-like manner.''

Also yesterday in the taekwondo competition, two-time gold medalist Chen Zhong was eliminated from a quarterfinal match after initially being declared the winner. It's the first time a match result has been overturned since taekwondo was included as an Olympic sport in 1990.

Sarah Stevenson of Britain was awarded the victory after officials reviewed video of the match following a protest and went on to receive a bronze medal. The Chinese team opted not to appeal the decision.

``We will overcome all difficulties,'' Jin said. ``We will show the world what the true taekwondo is at the end of the road.''

If you're a member of the party, you get a bunch of flowers and your victim gets shot.

If the arresting officers owe you a favour you get off scott free.

Anything else and your organs are on ebay within half an hour.

There's a "premier tae kwon do" exponent in mma?

hm...I looked him up on sherdog. Are you talking about the one with the 0-1 record or the impressive 1-0 record?

It is not unheard of to never see the light of a courtroom, i.e. go to jail and never heard from again.

Then again, this is a foreigner and cuba is a communist country.

Anyone know from which country the ref is from?
