On the night Mark Coleman (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=136) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/[email protected]@Mark%20Coleman)) was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, the former UFC heavyweight champion and Pride Grand Prix winner announced he will return to Octagon against Brock Lesnar (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=17522) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/[email protected]@Brock%20Lesnar)).

Scheduled for Aug. 9 in Minneapolis, Minn., the UFC 87 bout will be the first of a four-fight deal Coleman signed Saturday, Sherdog.com has confirmed.

"I'm gonna dedicate my life to this," said Coleman during the UFC 82 pay-per-view. "The fans want to see me. I'm going to pay my dues. I'm going to do the best I can. He's a beast. He's an animal. Don't bet the house against me. I'm going to bring something for Brock Lesnar (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=17522) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/[email protected]@Brock%20Lesnar))."

Coleman (15-8) has not fought a bout in the UFC since losing to Pedro Rizzo (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=208) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/[email protected]@Pedro%20Rizzo)) in 1999.

Lesnar (1-1) made his UFC debut on Feb. 2 in a losing effort to another former UFC heavyweight champ, Frank Mir (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=2329) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/[email protected]@Frank%20Mir)).

Is this a joke? Please tell me this is a joke. I like Coleman, but for a smallish heavyweight like him (he isn't much bigger than Cro Cop) who's WELL past his prime to take on a young and beastly guy like Lesnar is, in my opinion, a big mistake.

Plus, let's face it... Coleman has never been a very technical fighter in terms of striking and submission know-how. He's a good wrestler, but against an EXCELLENT wrestler like Lesnar, I don't think he stands much of a chance.

EDIT: I guess Coleman isn't as small as I thought... although Wikipedia lists him as being 224 pounds, Sherdog lists him as being 245 and Full Contact Finder reports his weight range as 225-255. Still, I don't see him posing much of a threat to Lesnar; Coleman doesn't have the stamina, speed, or striking/submission skills to make up for his size and strength disadvantage. I hate to say it, but Coleman is completely outclassed.

It should be Ronnie Coleman instead. You know, for the full freakshow effect.

That makes me wonder if Randleman may be fighting again. He had a lot of time off due to a nasty nasty staph infection. (see the Physical Health Forum for that.) He is supposedly doing an MMA seminar in Toronto later this summer.

How is Coleman going to fight in the UFC? If he's not on roids, then nobody is.

Nice one Captain Obvious. No body is wound that tight without being roided up.

Unfortunately, I see Coleman going the way of Alzedo....hopefully not, but ****, other than Baroni I have never seen a more angry tweaked out fighter.

I guess with Pride gone, other orgs are holding more freakshow fights?

Captain Obvious? Really? That hasn't been used since Urkel was on. Anyway how is he going to pass drug testing was the question.

Anyway, I'll certainly look forward to this more than I would if Coleman or Lesnar were fighting some no-name bums.

....the whole point is that this will be an easy win for Lesnar, building him up. Coleman's not supposed to have a chance.

Next up... Dan Severn gets a six-fight contract with DREAM! His first opponent? Bob Sapp.

Obviously that totally depends on how he does against Lesnar. There's probably an option in the contract to cut him before the four fights are done if he drops two in a row (like Crocop's). But who can say? I don't see how this hurts UFC at all.

The point is, if Lesnar can beat Coleman, he should move up the ladder and it will be impressive for him to have a win over a former HW champ under his belt. It's a building fight. Either guy wins, he becomes more marketable.

I'm happy to see Coleman back in the UFC. He might not be the best, but he's better than a lot of HWs.
