I'm off to university in a couple of weeks and I was thinking of doing some martial art training through one of the clubs. The following are offered:

Boxing
Judo
Kempo Karate
Kendo
Taekwondo
Wrestling

I'd like to do something for self-defense which isn't too expensive. Which style(s) do you think would be effective? I was considering doing Judo which is $240 per year.

Also is the TKD blatant Mcdojo-ism and bullshido? (they claimed it would be useful for self-defense): http://www.usydtkd.com/pages/view/gradings

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Bullshido, the best Martial Arts forum on the entire Internet, Excaliber. Seriously, you won't regret your choice to join us. We're a great bunch of folks, except for Hannibal. And Sirc. And TaiGip. And MMA Kid. And... well, you get the point.

Any info on what the clubs/people in them/instructors are like?

I'd suggest Judo or boxing for self-defense...wrestling might not be bad either. I suspect you'll hear the same from most others here.

Here is info on the Judo Coaches (at the bottom)
http://www-personal.usyd.edu.au/~sujudo/classes.htm

Boxing coaches: http://www.subxc.com.au/coaches.html

and TKD: http://www.usydtkd.com/pages/view/instructors
(I don't think I want to do it though)

I can't get info on the others at the moment

judo, boxing, wrestling. take one of those grappling arts, mix it with the boxing, and the result is decent training.
