Came across this in the Sydney morning herald. Just had to check twice to see if it was for real.

Australian military forces will be incorporating an ancient Chinese art as a result of a new decision by senior military personnel. Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art whose lineage extends back thousands of years, was originally created as a system to teach students fast and effective techniques in a minimum amount of time. Grandmaster Jim Fung, who will be a consultant in creating the new Combative system, originally came to Australia in 1973 and founded the International Wing Chun Academy in Adelaide. The system focuses on delivery of rapid strikes to the enemy’s vulnerable areas, whilst at the same time defending one’s own vulnerable areas. Defense and attack are often combined into lethal strikes which render an opponent unable to fight.

“Many of the world’s military units are adopting programs based on sport systems which emphasise taking an enemy to the ground and prolonging the fight. This is not practical for the modern battlefield. We must train our soldiers to finish the fight in seconds, and Wing Chun’s scientific principles will allow us to do that.” General Cosgrove said.

“This is an incredible opportunity to serve the country which has been a home to me for over twenty years.” Sifu Fung said. “Australia’s involvement in the fight against terrorism requires a new way of thinking about combat, and we hope that the Wing Chun system can give us the edge”.

I think the Marines BJJ guys should have an unarmed combat competition against the Australian's Wing Chun guys.

They'll just have to replace his system with another highly effective quick-kill system.

Grandmaster Asshida Kim can teach them T3h N1nj1tsu.

CHAAAAIIN PUUUNNCH!

When I was in the Aus' army, the basic training was hard, damn hard. No matter where in the army you came from, because not everyone did it (officers, apprentices etc...), you got respect for doing something not everyone could make it through. A lot has changed in twenty years.
I met a WC fella who was training military personal in Victoria barracks. He'd been to Thailand and fought some Thai boxers over there. If I can find his web site, it even says so on there. Turns out he got pretty much forced to jump in the ring and then got boo'd off. He's a really nice fella, but as far as MA skilz go, I'd feel quite safe around him.....if he were trying to attack me.

If you need to know, he's one of Billy Cheungs mob.

Still, it's gotta be better than SCARS :-)

Say it ain't so! The rough & tumble Ausies have begun to decline into chunner induced sissyness?

The power of networking, "it's not what you know, but who you know", is probably responsible for this mess. Some general's son probably took lessons from the Chunner and hooked him up with a lucrative contract.
