My instructor still insists you can effectively block punches and so we drill them over and over at quarter speed.

Why are you still a student there? Seriously. I'm not sure you can be elevated from being a Bullshido victim to a Bullshido survivor until you have effected an escape.

That Johnny Gyro was the greatest fighter ever.

I can't believe there's never been at least a YMAS thread on this guy. His claims are stunning. What the hell is a "United States Fight Team?" Why do I only get two results on Google for it, one of which is Gyro's page and the other of which is imdb where somebody named Tom Bloom claims to have ALSO been captain in 1988? I think I've found a new hobby. Great find, Chasen.

In High School i though wrestling was the gayest sport in the world and refused to go out for the wrestling team. I wish i would have known then what I know now ...... would have saved lots of money lol Don't feel bad. I wrestled in high school. Had some decent success. Even saved my butt a couple times in stupid school type scuffles. And I STILL WENT LOOKING FOR THE DEADLY!!!!

The answer to that question is slightly complicated. I won't get into detail so as not to get this thread off topic. But here's the basic story:
1. I am broke.
2. He offered me free lessons in exchange for mopping and vacuuming the dojo floor.
3. If I ever have the money I will attend Omega's teh awesome school (http://sbmartialarts.com/).

I figure I might as well be studying something instead of nothing. Plus, the sparring is a lot of fun and good experience.

I actually think this Google result is funny:

There are a lot of somethings you can study that are worse than nothing. If you're training so you can react incorrectly even more quickly, you're harming yourself, not helping. Also, tell us the ruleset and we'll tell you whether it's good experience or not.

On a side note, if you'll come clean my apartment for me I'll give you free food. Well, by food I mean I'll feed you the mold off my shower wall on toast, but hey it's free, and eating something is better than nothing, right?

Ah ... I see what you did there. Clever you. Pat yourself on the back for making up an analogy all by yourself.

Way to go for... avoiding the fact that it's correct and make fun of him for being clever, I suppose?

We can dream, can't we? Still, if he ever finds real training he'll eventually undo the damage he's doing to himself now, although it probably won't be free.

Just to recap though, we have totally flogged senseless the fact that you can train in things that actually have negative value for fighting, right? Like endlessly for the last 6 or 7 years, in places that a person could find using the search function or reading the megathreads like a good noob should, right?

Or how about the United Studios of Self Defense was actually concerned about teaching you real self defense techniques and it was totally not a McDojo. The things I used to believe, I'm surprised I'm not dead..

Yeah, best stay away from that chain.

Apparently, we're not supposed to talk about USSD here, though. Some sort of legal dispute from a few years ago.

Hmm, I'll take your advice into consideration. Although I enjoy learning kata and some of the other traditional aspects of karate, I don't want to spend the majority of my time doing that. Plus what you said about actually doing damage to myself by learning how to "parry punches" and all that nonsense. At the same time, though, I enjoy it and it's a good workout, so it's tempting to continue for now.

Omega teaches kung fu class a couple times a week ... I guess I could get my fix of traditionalism there while learning the useful stuff in classes like kickboxing and sambo. But ... the money simply isn't there right now. I'm only working part time, and if I get a better-paying job or more hours, I'll be there in a heartbeat.
