Hey guys

I'm a bit of a noob to this forum, obviously.

Anywho, I'm an aikidoka of 2 years' experience (oh noes) and since I'm moving for uni, I'm looking to cross train in another style. The options open to me are - Karate, Judo, TKD, Wing Chun or Krav Maga, or alternatively continue aikido in my current style (Yuishinkai) or in Yoshinkan.

Unfortunately, I can't offer my opinions on the teachers themselves, since I haven't seen them in action.
That said, any rough ideas on what would best compliment with aikido, or your thoughts on the individual styles would be a massive help.

Welcome to Bullshido, the best Martial Arts forum on the entire Internet, PockSuppet. Seriously, you won't regret your choice to join us. We're a great bunch of folks, except for Hannibal. And Sirc. And TaiGip. And MMA Kid. And... well, you get the point.

Cheers. After a quick browse of the forums, I get the feeling that aikidoka are in open season around here.

Judo.

Of the styles you listed, it has the best quality control. Additionally, most of the early Aikido people who could make it work had a judo background.

2+2 = Judo. Judo is never a wrong answer.

One of the old farts I've worked out wiht earned bbs in Aikido, Judo, and Kyokushin karate in his youth. And he sucks.

No no no, and he said that the Aikido actually helped him learn the kungfooey stuff that he now teaches. It of course depends on quality of the instructors and how live the schools train (search here for live training/Matt Thorton/ and so forth), but WC and TKD usually suck (though there are exceptions) and Judo (and maybe the karate - I mean if it's hard sparring sweaty workouts, great. If it's no touch sparring with a lot of focus on self-esteem, barf) tends to be better - but check out the schools and the ego and methods of the teachers (and the members of the sex you find attractive).

Yeah, unless you are white and you work out in Honolulu with the asshole racist Dojo, or the instructor has an ego problem, or the instructor just sucks - like sucky Sensei that teach power over technique because they never "got it," or you happen to want to learn to punch, and so forth.

Here's a nice Judo clip: http://youtube.com/watch?v=k6mi_lslC-Y&mode=related&search=

Actually IMO one of the nice things about judo is that you CAN use power over technique, and if it works, it works, that's all that matters. That's why it's not aikido.

Don't listen to patfromlogan. Judo classes are some of the most consistently good in the MA world. You'll love it- it's like Aikido that actually works.

All of the others you mentioned, including Aikido unfortulately, have a proven high incidence of suckage and McDojoism.
Welcome to Bullshido.

Yeah, right, all Judo is great and the fantastic Pearl City Leeward Judo Club (Honolulu) that was founded by sensei Tsuruo Fukushima and now taught by the '88 Olympic silver medalist Sensei Kevin Asano is equal to shitville judo club, anywhere in the world, or the asswipe racist fat so called sensei in Manoa (also in Honolulu)... right. All TKD sucks, all judo rules. Sounds like Bullshido to me, but what the **** do I know, I do worthless karate and kempo.

Consensus says judo.

No seriously, judo.

And if they do a reasonable amount of newaza, consider that a bonus.

Fer Christ sakes, try defining consensus for starts.

The majority doesn't equal consensus. Jesus H. Fucking Christ, go back to your shitty high school and retake social studies a couple dozen times and just perhaps you'll get a clue. No wonder we have the crap politicians in power with know-nothings blathering their wrong headed misunderstandings.

The majority (of nutriders) on this thread are saying, "Go with the Judo and ignore everything else - don't even dare to look at the other schools, even though this particular Judo dojo may be run by a crooked egomaniac moron sadist pedophile phony black belt who charges up the ass with three year contracts and the other schools may have a 1000 times better instructors, a 1000 times better techniques, be much cheaper, and have dozens of beautiful nymphets begging for back rubs."

Since it seems the Judo nut riders can't use logic or sense, I'll illustrate my opinions with these here pictures:

IF THE JUDO DOJO LOOKS LIKE THIS:

AND THE SENSEI IS THE BB IN FRONT HERE:

AND THE KARATE SENSEI LOOKS LIKE THIS:

AND THE SPARRING LOOKS LIKE THIS:

you just might possibly be better off training some place other than this particular Judo dojo.

It will cost you plenty (but mostly your soul); I stole the picture from an ATA TKD site....:thefinger

Some of my Honolulu friends's kids trained under fat racist Sensie and it killed any and all interest that they'd had in training martial arts. I'd never dream of sending my children to his dojo. Kevin Asano, on the other hand, jeez, I'd pay out the nose to send my kid's to his dojo, and of course, ironically, he hardly charges anything for the best Judo instruction.

"Now you trouble makers stop talking **** about my karate school!"

I was being facetious, Pat. Sorry, I didn't insert a facetious smilie for you. My bad.

But, please don't get all worked up just because you can't enjoy an ippon every now and then (this is also in jest, please don't beat me).

You are of course, correct. Newbs should always try whatever is available, taking up free introductory class offers before deciding.
