Ugly website. Terrifying logo. Try a class or 2 before you commit.

What about the style and/or instructor? Do they seem legitimate? I plan to take some trial classes, but it'd be nice to have a heads up on what to expect...

Based on the website, I would not go to the school. It is one of the worst websites I have ever seen. I have my doubts whether it is a serious site or not, until I called the number and someone actually answered.

My main problems:

Overall desgin. Too much flash, no substance. I cannot make a determination about what the school teaches because not enough information is given. If the school, art, and instructor are truly anything like the website. Stay away.

"Master Jeff Troshane - 5th Degree Black Belt"
My instructor is a 6th Degree. He doesn't call himself a master.

Kickboxing link is misleading. On the surface it appears the school offers kickboxing classes. That's good. Click on the link, you find out they are cardio-kickboxing class. Still ok, if that's what your looking for, but no what I think of when I see KICKBOXING.

Focus seems to be on kids and cardio-kickboxing. 4 karate classes per week available for Pee-wees, 6 karate classes per week available for youths, cardio-kickboxing 5 nights a week, but only 2 adult karate classes offered a week. Better hope you are free at those times, or you're screwed.

Mentions Navy SEALs under History section. Another huge red flag.

Karate section has sound file "Boards do not hit back", then in pictures shows students breaking boards.

All this being said, if you are still interested, I would go and check out the school. I have seen great schools that have shitty websites. It is possible you could find something worth while there, but I really don't think so.

Go there, check it out, and trust your gut.

I have never heard of Vadha Kenpo. But from what I have seen in my area, bastardize any MA with another and it can be called "Kenpo".
The web site is not great, but That could just be bad web design. You're going there for MA training not marketing.

Go there. Interview the instructors.
How long does it take to get a black belt?
This is a great BS detector. I find if they say antyhing like 2 years or less, it's a MC dojo!
Do I have to sign a contract? If so, does it have to be a long term contract?
I would be werry of any school that only offers long term contracts.
Are there belt contracts?
If yes, this is a red flag. The school may feel obligated to promote you just to fullfill the contract.

Also, ask yourself why you want to study MA. This will help you decide what scholl and style best fits your needs.

Your skills are EXTRAordinary; You have our Gratitude.

Good Catch on the Navy Seals thing. I had missed that.
Any sort of "special forces" traing in any marketing material is a big red flag, yes.

I live in NJ is you are near hamilton, near rt 33, 295 intersection. check out HMAILTON MARTIAL ARTS. I know the owners and they are real good with KENPO / BIG ON BJJ/HOOK WRESTLING / KNIFE contact me at [email protected] if you want more info.

In the fog of doubt and bad technique, pain clears the view to proper technique.

My biggest problem is the Vadha aspect. If an art is so esoteric that one can't really I.D. it, how can you know if it's really being taught, and not some random bullshit?

Just for the sake of contrast, look at my school's website.

http://www.haineskenpo.com

No outrageous claims. No using of the word "Master".

Full pricing information and video clips of some of the stuff taught.

Two locations with a variety of class times to fit YOUR schedule.

Articles containing information about what is taught and the strategies and philosophies of the system.

In my opinion a fair respresntation of what my school has to offer and what you can expect when you come in for a trial program.

"So what's your cut, Big Pun?"

ZERO! And I not happy about it either. My instructor may be a great martial artist and teacher, but he sure is a major tight ass when it comes to money. If it wasn't for me and my one man advertising blitz, he would be teaching in a van down by the river! :P

(Please know I was just kidding)

We used to have program where $50 was taken off that month's dues if someone signed up because you referred them, but it's been discontinued.

Now it's just the satifaction of sharing what my school provides with others, and getting new people to play with.
