<tr><td><img src="http://www.bullshido.com/images/articles/moritaarticle1.jpg"></td></tr></table>Actor Pat Morita has passed away at age 73. Morita, who is best known for his role in the 1990 movie "Collision Course" with co-star Jay Leno, also appeared in a small release film called "The Karate Kid", which supposedly had something to do with Martial Arts.

From age two to age eleven, Morita was unable to walk, suffering from spinal tuberculosis. Eventually he found solace in comedy, dubbing himself "The Hip Nip*" and cracking jokes along the lines of "LBJ stands for 'let's buy Japanese'". He described his comedy routine as "neither angry or sick... sometimes the people in the audience become both". Which despite being said in jest, is ironic given the effect the Karate Kid has on many modern Martial Artists today.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters from a previous marriage. It is unknown whether they study Karate or associate with Leno.

For better or for worse Pat Morita and The Karate Kid have had an influence on American martial arts which would be difficult to overstate.

Now would be an excellent time to re-pimp my article on the subject: http://www.bullshido.net/modules.php?name=Reviews&file=viewreview&id=70
