Even though i have always disliked most traditional martial arts, i have always liked watching the "shaolin" monks perform.

Are they even the real shaolin? i thought the real shaolin went to taiwan when the communist took over in china.

Don't you know, the warrior monks are why you never fight a
land war in asia.

Honestly I have no idea where the hell the real shaolin are.

When I was a kid, I saw Shaolin monks (I THINK) perform "amazing" feats. One such trick was to make a bowl stick to his stomach using only his Chi. Or perhaps he was creating a vacuum seal, which is how everyone ELSE does this trick. The monks went on to perform other stupid tricks that have nothing to do with mystical powers. Seriously. Lame. This TV show is what caused me to lose faith in traditional martial arts (faith that has actually been RESTORED by Bullshido, oddly enough).

The Chinese government screwed the Shaolin temple completely. Now they are forced to train Wushu to peform olympic ginastics around. Disgusting.

Their performances are enjoyable to watch. They are very physically talented to do a lot of that stuff.

They're probably in better shape than most of you. I respect them for keeping a dead art alive. Or at least trying very damn hard.

Total bullshit. Acrobats with a martial "flavor" and nothing more.

No, the "real" Shaolin did not go to Taiwan ... exclusively ... when the Cultural Revolution struck. "It" went many places and is very much alive today as held by a Chinese secret society that spans the Earth ... pretty much everywhere save for the Sandanavian area.

The society was all ready well established prior to the Cultural Revolution so it provided a natural vehicle for preservation ... the society marks 332 years of documented - recorded history this coming Chinese New Year.

So... XMA is actually the official martial art of the Shaolin warrior-monks?! No wonder it's so scientifically advanced...wait that doesn't make sense

ic so shaolin split up and was helped by a chinese secret society. like the chinese societies that helped imigrants in america in the 1800's? Or like the CMA society that challenged bruce lee for teaching non chinese.

Some branches are Tongs - Triads, yes.

Or like the CMA society that challenged bruce lee for teaching non chinese.

Vastly overplayed story ... Jun Fan had lots of fights in NYC Chinatown ... he just didn't win any.

The art is dead at Shaolin. What lives there is cynical commercialism

When people talk about Shaolin, do they mean both Northern and Southern temples ?

I remember reading a Dan Docherty article which said he'd been to the southern one and he thought those monks were doing something pretty decent, although he was certainly no fan of what went on at the northern 'temple'.

All I remember is Dan saying that 20 years ago at shaolin (north south?), there were just two guys....one was a cleaner who swept leaves up and one was a vagrant who lived in a door way..........and now its a bustling kung fu hub, with a unbroken lineage!
