Re:
Answers to questions about Self Defense Forums

Q: “I heard that SDF was closing down, is it true?”

<img src="http://www.bullshido.com/images/sissyfight.jpg" align=right>A: No, we’re not closing down. We are currently going through a transitional period while we examine restructure our management.

Q: “What happened?”

After a heated debate about how the forums should be run it was mutually agreed that the senior staff including Ken Cook, Don Rearic, Lee Aldridge (RBFC) and Craig Douglas (Southnarc) would be moving on to pursue a new venture.

One of the biggest issues in this debate was the level of professionalism (or lack thereof) on the part of the former administrators and moderator of this forum.

A secondary issue was the outright mistreatment of forum members. The staff had developed a lack of tolerance and condescending attitude toward anyone whose opinion differed from their own.

This mean spirited abuse of the members of this community goes against the very reason why SDF was created.
This forum was conceived as a place where people could seek answers and share opinions without fear of being ridiculed and belittled.

<img src="http://www.bullshido.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3257" align=left>Q: “Why was the forum closed over the weekend?”

A: When it was decided that the senior staff was leaving I wanted to be civil about it. I said “No ill will, no hard feelings” I even allowed 24 hours additional forum access so that anyone wanting to depart could have a chance to back up any personal info and tie up any loose threads.

Unfortunately, they took advantage of my generosity and used it against us. Early Saturday morning, several former staff members accessed the admin control panel and began deleting the database.

Anticipating some form of “retaliation”, I had backed up the database a few hours before. I spent all day Sunday reloading from the backup file.

In addition to vandalizing database, they also stole the email addresses of all registered users.
No member personal information was accessed however,
as a precautionary measure it is recommended that all members log in and change your forum password.
This can be done by logging in and clicking the “User CP” link. http://www.selfdefenseforums.com/forums/usercp.php?
This will take you to your personal control panel. There you can edit your password.

If you need help doing this please contact me.

Q: “When will the forums be opened?”

<img src="http://www.kchooknshoot.com/images/soccer_crotch.jpg" align=right>A: I am doing one more search to make sure that there are no more hidden back doors into the system.
When I am satisfied that everything is secure I will open up the forums.

Q: So, what’s going to be different?”

A: For the moment not much. The forums are running and everything will pretty much be business as usual.
In the next week we will be filling the open admin and moderator positions drawing from our membership.
If you are interested in moderating in any of the forums feel free to drop me an email. [email protected]

Soon, I am going to expand the Practical Unarmed Combat forums to include sub forum topics for Traditional Martial Arts, Mixed Martial Arts and Free Fighting.

The Street Smarts forum will be expanded to include the sub forum “Urban Survival”.

Finally, “In The Vortex” will be merged with the News forum under the title “Self Defense In the News”.

Thanks to all who have emailed and called expressing your continued support of this community.
Lets put this incident behind us a move forward as we continue to build the web #1 site for the discussion of self-defense.

Whataya think about them happenings?
Drama within the admin staff basically tore apart SDF from the inside.
All the Admins/Mods we (Bullshidoka) had problems with in the past are gone.
What will the future hold?

I'd be taking a wait and see approach.

Just because the **** is gone, doesn't mean they'll have any thing of value there.

I might point out that the heart and soul of the Admin staff: Phrost, Asia, Omega, KCElbows (under a new name) are still here and have never deviated from the "mission" of the site.

As well, though the recent drama was hurtful and disruptive to the site, and to myself on a personal level, I was deeply heartened by the responses from the core staff, which proved to me that they still understood and were willing to fight for the original vision of Bullshido.

As well, I think that the new staff we have are the right mix of steady and aggressive.

Tis the season, to spread drama,
Fa la la la la, la la, la puke.

Must be a drama virus going around.

One of the key features of this website has always been that we (the staff) does not give prejudice to one view over another provided there is evidence to support either. There's a marked difference between setting a tone for enthusiastic, open debate given such caveats, and being abusive to members.

If you believe a 540 spin kick can work on the street, fine. Back it up with something stronger than an anecdote, and nobody will give you crap for it (at least nobody on the staff.)

Next month will be 3 years of Bullshido and our Bully Squad (Battalion?). Despite weathering untold stupid suits for defamation, death threats, libel, legal jockeying with a billion dollar megacorp, and attempts to hack the site, we're still here. The only times the site goes down is when something screws up internally or we exceed our bandwidth limitations (we're doing roughly 150 Gigabytes a DAY now, choke on that... I did).

One of the most amazing things about this site is the quality of people that it retains. The core members of this website tend to be highly educated and/or articulate and well-read. Most of the low-brow ribbing that goes on here is done facetiously to make fun of the other MA sites whos average member is around 15.

In the next few months the site will expand to one or two sister sites. One being the tranfer of the Current Events/Politics forum to a dedicated site of its own, and another project that's still under wraps to help restructure Bullshido itself more effeciently.

With all this in mind I'm inspired and amazed how this little experiment that started out as a embarassingly crappy little website (http://www.mcdojo.com/retards.html) has grown into a serious force to combat the bs in martial arts.

I found some good links on legalities in different areas over there.

I'm actually really pleased to see that the rest of the board management realized that whatever good they had accummulated and were able to share was buried in and amongst such steaming piles of effluent as was spewed from the mouths of the "sacred few" in "their house".

I loved to scan threads where the new poster was immediately jumped-upon and told to post an introduction, then told that they had to kiss the ass of the key posters for several months before they were allowed to actually have their own opinion. I saw one in the last couple weeks where a new poster was told to remove a hot-link to his own website in his signature...because he hadn't been on the board long enough to have the privledge of a hot link...he was told that this was "one of our unwritten rules."

I also liked to read down threads looking at the posters status...the number of banned posters was absolutely massive...even ones with hundreds to multiple thousands of posts. It was fun to check to see what got them kicked off...more often than not, they simply disagreed during a "debate" with one of the sacred cows and were then banned with a massive dose of explitives etc. Total mutual masturbation society for their core mod group...can't wait to see where the roll call of RBSD virtual toughguys show-up next. What asses.

I'm surprised it took as long as it did to implode. Frankly, I thought that was the norm there, an elite few dictating edicts to the masses.

Pathetic, but hardly a revelation.

Every forum will have it shares of problems with bad management. The worst possible thing any member can do is to suck up to it, thereby encouraging rotten behavior. This is what apparently occurred with the SDF.

Oh god, didn't someone do a thread about that here? 'Their house' really a sad group of losers. They cut their own throats.

RBSD are losers, if anything makes that point this incident should.

Funny how just a few months ago James was singing a much merrier tune :eusa_doh: ->

Sdf 2005 (http://www.selfdefenseforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-10449.html)

James

We expect this growth to continue steadily and we are confident that our numbers will double by the end of 2005. We have gone through several staff changes to arrive at our current roster of volunteers.

We have a super group of moderators on the boards these days. All of them working together to give our members and readers the best user experience that we can provide.

In fairness to our many new members, I am providing a listing of our current staff and a brief description of their duties.
..................................

Don and Ken are tasked with the responsibility of overseeing the SDF community.
All moderators report to them and they are often the final word in forum dispute resolution.

By far the most important part of their job is screening new forum members and weeding out the crackpots. Because of the diligence of these two gentlemen, SDF has been able to stay true to its mission: teaching no-nonsense, no compromise self-defense.
.......................................

Ken Cook:

We've been "attacked" by various and sundry groups who are, shall we say "disenchanted" with our no-nonsense approach to self defense and lack of tolerance for those who place their desire to make a buck before their desire to disseminate good information to those who most desperately need it. Over all, I think these attacks, or "hate fests" if you will, always turn out to be a VERY GOOD thing as the free advertising and seeming controversy invariably exposes SDF to new viewers. It never fails, many come to laugh at what they don't understand and the smart ones stay to learn.

Query: Ken, if the SDF is so great, why were you fired..luh, sorry, why did you quit? Sorry to interrupt Ken, please continue your diatribe-

By the way, how do you like the 'free advertising' I'm giving you here? :bootyshak

Ken Cook

For the third year in a row, SDF has been a force to be reckoned with, teaching people how to kick ass and let someone else worry about taking names. SDF has been teaching people not just how to think, but how to out-think the other guy and prevail!

If you ask me Ken, looks like your beloved forum has imploded and is hardly the force you hoped it would be, more of a farce really. I apologize for the interruptions Ken, please go on -

Ken Cook
Looking back over those three increasingly successful years, I feel more than safe in saying that SDF is here to stay.

The forum maybe, you, sorry. :toothy10:

Ken Cook

We've established our rightful prominence in the Self Defense world, not just on the Internet but on the ground in the real world, with SDF members meeting and training together all over North America. With projects like Southnarc's DVDs, and the collaboration between SDF, Spyderco, and EKI, we will continue to push the edge of the envelope and re-define the the role of Internet Forum as not just a place for "Keyboard Kommandos" engaging in meaningless mental masturbation, but as a real source for real people seeking and more importantly, finding, real solutions to real problems!

MY! Such grand dreams, such vision! :notworthy

Ken Cook
My thanks to the SDF Team Members who have labored so long and hard to make SDF what it is.

Awwww, now wasn't that just precious? Come on, group hug fellas. :5grouphug
